Whenever I need an entry level desktop for someone, I generally pop on the DELL site, throw together an entry-level Optiplex with i5 and 8GB of RAM, and be done with it. Sometimes I'd drop down to the Vostro or Inspiron if they were really trying to save money. (Such as for a non-profit or something like that.) Though usually it's really not enough of a cost savings to warrant.

Someone asked me if I could get something to them very quickly this week. I know DELL has the preconfigured systems ready to go, but there has been some talk on ML recently about the types of machines people buy, and where they buy them from. So, I was thinking maybe there might be an alternative for me. Maybe even someplace like Amazon where I could get it in a day.

How/Where do you source machines you need quickly? And what are you buying these days?

Are these personal machines? Or for a business? In the past when working with a VAR I was able to get specced machines in 3-4 days.

          It's for a business. A small non-profit.

But it was just a general question I had ... in general. (Reminds me of: "Allow myself to introduce ... myself.")

DELL has always been quick like that. But I"m looking for something quicker.

It's non mission critical. As I said, I was just curious what people were doing.

I've purchased systems from Amazon before. With Prime, it's 2 days.

I never bought (desktops) through them, but as a Non-Profit you can look at TechSoup. They have some systems.

In a 'I need it now' time frame, go with Dell or HP, they have decent pre-configured lines, and will do some NPO pricing.

We do this for HP. We work with Softmart and can get most things in a few hours when needed, next day is very doable.
