Awesome, so I can't even approach the OP publicly to let them know that other conversations are going on.

David can eat a bag of *****

SW can't allow people to post links that steal their conversations to other forums.. they need to keep everyone there.

Yeah, but deleting the whole post? He could remove the links and post an answer, for example.

removing the links still tells other people that someone is talking about these things elsewhere. They don't want that.

This always has to be done via PM. No matter what forum you are talking about they don't want things to leave the community.

I once had a post removed from Experts Exchange due to posting an answer and sourcing another forum, from where I found the resolution. They can do this, as it is in there Terms of Use of using the site.

I would expect at least some education in IT. We all (should have) learned about correct source citation. Stating an information's source is not only valid but important IMHO.

I found the message I was sent.

"Links to competing sites: A "competing site" is one that exists solely as a Q&A forum
Exactly. Think StackOverflow as a perfect example of a competitor. Something like Microsoft's forums; however, would be fine as they are not really a competitor. Basically just use common sense. No one is going to berate you for posting a genuinely useful link, but do bear in mind that EE doesn't want to loose business by directing all its clients to competitor sites 🙂

They are explicitly not allowed to that, we've checked.

Right, the most important thing is that they can't let people know that THEY are blocking links to other sites.

This suggests that the panic is setting in.

So instead everyone will just PM the OP of these topics and lead them elsewhere.

Since there is no controlling of the PM function.

Posting links in open questions that encourage Members to use competing sites.

I would expect at least some education in IT. We all (should have) learned about correct source citation. Stating an information's source is not only valid but important IMHO.

Do what I do... state that there is a source and state that we aren't allowed to link to it. Nothing is more damaging that making it public that they are so scared that they can't let their members find out about other communities while giving them the opportunity to allow us to link. They can stop that anytime that they want.

Right, the most important thing is that they can't let people know that THEY are blocking links to other sites.

This suggests that the panic is setting in.

Or that the are specifically blocking a user who is calling their users stupid on another community and trying to cross link to said community.

This always has to be done via PM. No matter what forum you are talking about they don't want things to leave the community.

I once had a post removed from Experts Exchange due to posting an answer and sourcing another forum, from where I found the resolution. They can do this, as it is in there Terms of Use of using the site.

It is an important rule of ML that this CAN'T happen. References to other sites (at least for reference and citation) are totally allowed. You only limit those links when you are not open (manipulating the results) or in fear (don't want users to know.)
