Final choice is between these two configurations:

      Core i7 6700k
      Some Z170 board
      16GB DDR4
Pro: Higher core speed, good for Arma III

      vs

      Xeon E3 1240v5
      Some C236 board
      16GB DDR4 ECC
      Pro: ECC

Price difference: 20 EUR. Anyone got a dice or a coin?

Isn't cache a huge difference between I series and Xeon chips. Might not be meaningful in your case...

              Yes it is.

                Yes it is.

The final decision was between ECC and Cache vs significant better single thread performance.

Right, since you've got a GPU sorted, I vote for the Xeon. You don't need the on board graphics of the i7.

Is the single thread performance that noticeable in the real world?

Also, that i7 has no stock CPU cooler. Add that to your purchase list.

Yes, it is. A Xeon at the same frequency should be faster due to its cache. But the 1240v5's base freq is 500 MHz lower and everything above is expensive.

Also there are still very few C236 boards available, and I didn't like a single one of them.

                    Sure 🙂

BTW, I've found an interesting M.2 NVMe SSD: Intel 600p/6000p. Ordered a 512GB 600p. Not the fastest around, but it was close to SATA pricing and reads are at least 3 times faster than what's possible with SATA 3.

Righto, after a bit more research, the i7 is probably what you're looking for.
