No, it's W-series and W stands for Workstation:

New Intel Xeon W Processors Deliver Optimized Performance for Mainstream Workstation Professionals

It says that on the group page, but look at the specific page for that processor. Says server right on it, and on its parent page.

Yes, but that's the vertical segment. There's no segment for workstation, hence the reason it doesn't say workstation. Intel only have a few segments: desktop, embedded, mobile and server.

But have a look at Dell or HPE. You'll find it next to impossible to find a rackserver with a workstation CPU like W-2175. But you'll find it in plenty of workstations (Dell Precision, HP Z). That should tell you something.

PS. Pricing is not a lot different between the workstation and server CPUs.
      Comparable to the 14 core W-2175 @ 2.5GHz is 14 core Intel Xeon Gold 6132 @ 2.6 GHz.
      Rec. price: $1947 versus $2111.

But Dell and HPE don't focus on single CPU servers, which has long been something that they lacked. Their models are long build around the higher cost dual CPU configurations. Which would explain that more than anything.

When Intel's single socket workstation CPU is the same price as one multi-socket server CPU, why should they bother? They have single socket AMD Epyc servers which makes sense when it comes to price and performance.

The new Intel Xeon W processors are based on the Intel Xeon Scalable processor microarchitecture, but designed into a cost-optimized1 1-socket form factor specifically for professional workstations.

It has the LGA2066 socket that it shares with Intel's high-end desktop CPUs but the Xeon W-series have ECC support. But who cares as long as it gets the job done for the right price. As you said it might be the best cost performance ratio for cloud deployment.

From your benchmarks you have a little more than 35% higher performance on Vultr. The other providers are still on the older E5-2600 generation of CPUs. When your instance shows up on a machine with the latest generation Xeon the performance will be the same. Then it will be a matter of uncontrollable parameters like how the provider allocate resources.

Unless one opts for dedicated instances. I know Vultr has them.

Basically, this is how we can get performance numbers. Nothing from the vendors themselves is useful. And collecting on production boxes isn't useful. With any shared system, we can only hope for decently clean numbers and then extrapolate over provisioning.

Most VMs are actually doing something, like running a webserver.

Would it be better to actually monitor things like response time, over time to actually get some metric that has some use in real life?

Aren't there any services that can do this, similar to Alexa for uptime for instance?

BTW, the CPU in your Vultr test is Intel Xeon W-2175 CPU @ 2.50GHz, from Intel's workstation CPUs.

But still, a lot more performance.

Yes, this time and that's good, but you need a lot more than one sample to draw any meaningful conclusions, except that Vultr uses workstation hardware, at least on one machine.

@scottalanmiller That's a dubious test at best. The only thing you are really testing is how much resources you had available on your specific instance and at that specific time. It says nothing about how much resources you are going to have next week or on another instance. Unless you were running thousands of test over a period of time (did you?).

And it only tests the CPU and not disk or network speed or latency.

BTW, the CPU in your Vultr test is Intel Xeon W-2175 CPU @ 2.50GHz, from Intel's workstation CPUs.

If we are going to draw any conclusions, it would be that you on your Vultr test had about 75% of the CPU resources on that core allocated to you at that time.

    • HP switches "lifetime" warranty and opinions on 2540

What's the deal on the switches from HP?

Life time warranty used to be for the entire life of the product for the original owner but now lifetime means 5 years? How could 5 years be a lifetime? Are they only made to last 5 years? Or does lifetime mean different things depending on what product it is?

And I'm looking for recommendations for managed gigabit switches with 10G uplink and HP 2540 24G/48G seems to fit the bill. Any experience with these?

    • RE: Standard Email Signatures in Office 365 with Embedded Images

I know nothing about O365, but are you sure embedded images are not supported in "disclaimers"?

It seems like html is supported and embedded images are just base 64 encoded data inside the html.

It can be done two ways,

      • inline in the img tag <img src=”data:image/png;base64,.....
      • multipart mime <img src="cid:.....

This is what other email clients do with embedded images. They let the user add the image but then the software encodes it into the html in the message instead of having it as a link. So if you can craft the html yourself you are not depending on the capabilities of the application.

    • RE: Looking for firmware

That's one reason I don't like Dell or HP. They put their name on stuff they didn't make and then makes firmware and drivers difficult to find, especially on older stuff.

Anyway straight HBA card on R640 seems to be the Dell HBA330.

According to this, it's just a card with the LSI SAS3008 controller, also known as the SAS 9300-8i controller card.

Here are the latest firmware and tools
      https://www.broadcom.com/products/storage/host-bus-adapters/sas-9300-8i#downloads

And here is a guide from someone who flashed an IBM card wih the same controller. Maybe it could be of assistance in your case too:

    • RE: Virt-manager: create vm

@dafyre That doesn't work, at least not in the the virt-manager version I have - 1.4.3. The VM is never created if you cancel the installation. Even if you do some changes and apply them and then cancel.

    • RE: Beware of significant VM host overhead using NVMe drives

PS. I had a look on the guest side of thing just now because that is what Microsoft talked about.

Most OSs are virtualization aware. I had a look at debian running as guest under Xen with a clean install without any Xen guest tools. Debian installation automatically sense it's running on virtualized hardware and sets it's I/O scheduler to "none", thereby letting the host handle whatever I/O scheduling needed. This also makes sense because the guest doesn't know what kind of storage the host is using.

    • RE: Beware of significant VM host overhead using NVMe drives

@black3dynamite said in Beware of significant VM host overhead using NVMe drives:

Microsoft recommends using I/O scheduler NOOP for better disk I/O performance.
Maybe the same thing applies to KVM and Xen.
      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/best-practices-for-running-linux-on-hyper-v#use-io-scheduler-noop-for-better-disk-io-performance

More info about Noop I/O scheduler
      https://access.redhat.com/solutions/109223

That's a good point and I did look into the I/O scheduling options when trying to optimize I/O under Xen.

Noop is the recommended I/O scheduler for SSDs but regular SSDs are much slower than NVMe SSDs. So on linux the default scheduler for NVMe drives is None - no I/O scheduling.

The purpose of the I/O scheduler was to organize the writes and reads so the drive could work on the data in the most efficient order. That made a lot of sense for mechanical drives where it would take a significant amount of time to move the heads from one position on the drives to another.

The Noop scheduler will not reorder the write and read operations but it will merge some of them together for optimization.

The None option doesn't do anything but sends all the requests to the drive and let the drive handle any optimization. NVMe drives have 65 thousand command queues that each can hold 65 thousand commands so it can take everything the CPU throws at it.

Standard SSD drives on the other hand have the same queue system as their mechanical brothers - one command queue that is only 32 commands deep.

    • Beware of significant VM host overhead using NVMe drives

I have noticed that there is significant overhead using NVMe drives (U.2) when running virtualized. I've done simple test on both Xen and on KVM.

It seems to be the nature of the beast according to Redhat.
      0_1536261384848_overhead_nvme.jpg

Both Xen and KVM have changed to polling instead of interrupt driven architecture to improve the performance somewhat.

My quick tests show that around 1700 to 2200 MB/s of sequential read on the host turns into around 950 MB/s on the guest. Sequential write goes from 1100 MB/s on the host to around 950 MB/s on the guest.

On Xen I get only about 550 MB/s of read and I'm trying to find out why - when KVM is around 950 MB/s. Write performance on Xen is around 950 MB/s when I force Dom0 to use only the physical CPU attached to the PCIe bus where the NVME drive is attached. When Xen is free to do what it feels is best, it sometimes put Dom0 across both physical CPUs and write performance drops to 550 MB/s.

Anyway, in summary it looks like NVMe drives might be somewhat wasted in virtual environments. The ones I've used have been Intel DC P3520 and Intel DC P4510 in smaller capacities (1TB). P4510 in 1TB for instance has 2800 MB/s sequential read and 1100 MB/s seq write but as you go up in size the performance increases. 4TB P4510 has 3000 MB/s seq read and 2900 MB/s write.

I've read about SR-IOV which is I/O virtualization where the guest could share the PCIe bus device with other guests and thereby avoid the hypervisor overhead. I haven't found much info on the status of that in linux kernel and KVM or Xen support for it. I know it's used for NICs but haven't tried it myself.

Please share if you have any experience using NVMe drives in virtual environments!

    • Rookie question: adding disk to centos KVM host

I've added an U.2 SSD disk to my KVM test system. It shows up as /dev/nvme0n1 and it's working. So far, so fine.

I'm using virt-manager and latest centos. What do I need to do with the disk so I can put some VMs on it?

I want thick provisioning or whatever the highest performing is where I can put multiple VMs on the disk.

PS. I'm used to xen where you would run xe sr-create on the device and it would create a storage repository with LVM for you and that would be it. I find a gazillion guides on the web how to add a disk to the KVM guest but that's not what I'm looking for.

    • RE: ScreenConnect?

      @scottalanmiller said in ScreenConnect?:

SC is the most powerful, reliable, and lowest cost tool of its kind that I've used. Not that it is ground breaking so worlds better, it's just the best one that I've used thus far. The cost is a bit lower than most, at least on our grandfathered plan, and it does everything that we need and basically nothing that we don't.

So what's the primary use case, remote assistance/support?

Re: Unable to turn up ScreenConnect server on Fedora 28

I never used it so wonder where it fits in.

What is the purpose of Screen Connect? What can it do that you can't with other remote solutions? In what situations would you use it?

    • RE: Sudden blackouts Windows 101803

You guys sure have spent a considerable amount of time on this. Way more than I would or could have afforded.
Since you are building several, how about just putting together a second one and do clean install on that one.
If it works as it should, it's not software.
