Lavabit was a company that provided this until they decided to shut down last year instead of comply with gov't requests to allow them access to the encryption keys that the company was using to encrypt all of their customer's data.

Worst than that, the owner was found to be in contempt of court when he turned over a printed copy of the encryption key in something like 2 pitch font.

If you aren't the only one with the keys to decrypt, then there is no point in using a system like this!

It's a subscription to Office Home Premium desktop applications and extra OneDrive space.

I had heard about that before. A bizarre idea. Cool but dangerous, of course. Great way to spread malware. You'd really need to be careful and I imagine that it will not really catch on because the level of effort is so ridiculously high while the payoff is so long. Hook up to random storage and find out if anything valuable is there. Ugh.

Maybe if they were read only and there was a way to know that something useful was there, but just purely blind data transfer is both scary and boring, IMHO.

I think of them as consumer. Hard to picture using them in a business setting.
