      Hello!

I wanted to reach out to the community as I just got laid off at my job as a Windows/VMWare system admin. I currently have an opportunity to take on a role as a Linux/Xen admin but the company is reluctant to hire me as it has been about 7 years since I was heavily engulfed in the *NIX world. They are bringing me in for a technical interview next week to see how I measure up. Until then, I really want to sharpen my skills, and so am looking for a project to work on that'll give me all the basics and some advanced knowledge to bring it all back to me.

Any suggestions on a project(s) are welcome!

Since the company that I interviewed with is running Zabbix, maybe I should try that.

Thanks everybody for these fantastic ideas!

I'm enjoying a croissant and an espresso at a cafe, after being stood up by Amazon for my technical phone interview 😛 I think big companies need to understand that EVERYONE'S time is valuable, not only their's.

@MattSpeller Thanks for the kind words! Yeah at my last job, I used to wear a bowtie every Wednesday (bowtie wednesday) to spice things up in the dep't. This next opportunity should be killer!

    • Installing MariaDB

      Hey guys,

I've been building a Zabbix monitoring server this week, and was just about to install MariaDB for it's backend database (not for the front end). Was wondering if it would be better to install it as a db user or as an admin on the box?

    • Installing Zabbix on Centos 7

I am currently installing Zabbix on Linux and have installed all the necessary apps before installing Zabbix itself and have run into a dependency issue that won't allow me to install the zabbix database. The error is as shown below:

      Error: Package: zabbix-server-mysql-2.4.7-1.el6.x86_64 (zabbix)
      Requires: libnetsnmp.so.20()(64bit)

Not sure what to do here as my research on Google didn't bring up anything on libnetsnmp.so.20.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    • New Zabbix install with Separate MariaDB database

I am in the midst of building a Zabbix monitoring system and have run into an issue with the install.

Since I wanted to separate the database form the actual site, there were no installation instructions. I followed the instructions to a tee, I just did the database install on a different server. Now, I can login to the database from the Zabbix server without any issues, but when it came to the initial Zabbix webpage setup (//localhost/zabbix) it can't see the database.

I have checked the user, permissions, etc... Not sure what I have done wrong or if anyone out there has done a similar install but am officially stuck.

I am currently writing a script to automate the process of installation and configuration of an Nginx web server. What I'd like to do is add variables where anyone can change the IP address and hostname to what they would like to. I am by no means a scripting expert and it's been a while since I had to write a script. I am looking how to do this in bash.
