    • RE: Onlyoffice vs Collabora in Nextcloud

      Update:
I was able to get it working with a self-signed certificate and the functionality is great. I had NC connected to the OO server with https://localip That worked fine but once left my LAN, from the web it tried to resolve the local ip. That of course will not work and it does zero good to only work while you are on the LAN. I was unsuccessful at getting the self-signed cert to work behind nginx reverse proxy.
Is it possible to just have nginx forward http to the OO server and:

      1. Allow Letsencrypt to verify and issue the certs
      2. Actually function behind the proxy if the actual cert is on the OO server directly. I cannot find any good documentation of OO working properly behind the reverse proxy in the normal sense.

    • Secondary WAN IP on Edgerouter

I have an Edgerouter with some public-facing services behind it. I added another public address to the eth0 interface and NAT rules. I can reach the services behind the router from the secondary WAN IP if I am not on the LAN. If you go to the public IP from the LAN, it brings up the login page for the router itself. I know there is a setting somewhere but I'm not having any luck. Do I need SNAT and DNAT combined to make this work?

    • AzureAD and shares

A friend of mine started a company a few years ago. Someone convinced him to get the full O365 with AzureAD. He has a handful of employees and sharing files on the LAN is painful. Their PCs are not "joined" to AzureAD but their user accounts reflect this. Should they be joined? I don't use Azure and am trying to give him some pointers. What should I recommend to him?

@IRJ That is exactly the reason they cannot pinpoint all the anomalies to a specific user.

@IRJ @Obsolesce They actually want a DB for this data but keep finding subpar developers and wasting money.

    • RE: AzureAD and shares

They were using ODfb with the Office 365 Business Premium. I am convinced that the root of the problem is that they had 20 employees syncing to the same "account" such as office.company.com They are trying to do the same thing now with Nextcloud. I can't get through to them that the "field" guys need to only do a file drop to the server and stop trying to sync everything.

This company 100% needs a web app with a database backend ASAP. It would alleviate the majority of their problems.

    • Backup Target for Linux

I have a Fedora 30 server that I backup to a ReadyNAS 2100 at home. I have a NFS share set up on the NAS. A script runs on the server and rsyncs the data to the NAS. The NAS is in need of replacing due to age even though it has been dependable.
Would another F30 server with a Samba share be the best option? I could purchase another NAS and do the same thing. The new backup target will reside in a separate building that is climate controlled. Is there a better alternative?

Only 1 of the Ubiquiti models gets power from PoE. The other 2 models get commercial power to the first panel and then daisy-chain from there.

    • Disable USB Ports

What is the go-to tool for disabling USB storage access on Win 10 machines? Been wanting to do this for a while but it keeps getting put off. Is Group Policy the best method? I know it can be done there but I am sure there are tools as well.

@notverypunny It is on a domain and I'm leaning towards GPO. Never hurts to get input from others though.

    • RE: Domain Planning: Network shares or ,..

Dealing with this now as well. Don't forget bandwidth when everything is offsite. A lot of folks I deal with cannot get a decent amount of bandwidth or at a reasonable price. Some people refuse to work with files in a browser. So many variables.

    • RE: Can Windows 7 Still Upgrade to Windows 10

I have upgraded approx 20 Win7 Pro machines to Win10 Pro in the past couple of months - 2 last week in fact. They all accepted the Win 7 product key and show that Windows is activated with a digital license. Zero issues.

    • IP phones with no PBX

I know it is possible to hang a phone directly off of voip.ms or [insert provider] but.... I have a recent customer that has 2 POTS lines at his office. He is retiring soon and wants to have the calls ring at his office and at his home which is in another town. If I port both lines to a SIP provider, will it work to have 2 phones connected to the same account and have both DIDs ring simultaneously to both phones? I could put a PBX in Vultr but that seems overkill. Very low call volume. There is only 1 user and 2 phones. There is a solid WAN connection at both locations. There would be no growth or adding lines as it is a 1 man shop. I know RingCentral would be a solution but it seems there may be alternatives.

    • RE: Fiber to Ethernet Media Converter, What's your preference?

I've had good luck with Allied-Telesis and Transition Networks. Last time I did a project where I needed to convert - I just used a cheap D-Link or Netgear switch on each end with SFP ports. Have some still deployed going on 4 years now and no issues. This was used to deliver service to a fuel station and isolate it.fiber.JPG

    • RE: Fiber to Ethernet Media Converter, What's your preference?

My reasons for a low-end switch with SFP ports was also due to warranty. Most of the stand-alone media converters have a 1 year warranty. I can get Netgear, D-Link, etc with a Lifetime Warranty. Made sense in my application.

@NashBrydges This is correct. You send the "fax" to an email address. The subject line of the "fax" is the fax number.
