    • RE: Amazon S3 Outage shows the danger of doing things cheaply.

@coliver It depends, in this article I just looked at S3 storage alone and without any bandwidth charges.

What is the app, how much storage, how much processing, power and memory, how much bandwidth, how many users, which geographic locations they need to serve. Complexity of the app or service to install/update/deploy

Its like any IT project. What is the risk of this happening, what is the cost of prevention and making an informed decision. The same thought process and decision making that goes into a single server setup or dual server setup on prem stays when we look into cloud computing.

Potentially. AWS and S3 do offer some interesting load balancing that would be cheaper then double the price.... still not sure it would be worth the expense though.

AWS costs are a bit of mine-field so for simplicity of math lets assume equal spend if you want copies.

S3 does indeed have geo distribution for the storage but that costs more money.

      Also...

If all of your eggs are inside a single management portal, what happens if that 1 management portal gets breached?

I disagree with the article. One of the main reasons I would move to a cloud service is to outsource my redundancy and resilience.

But you don't buy any of that from Amazon. This is the biggest misconception about cloud computing.

What you are buying is access to resources on their platform, you can buy resources in Asia, US, Europe but it is completely up to you to design and manage these resources so they work according to your needs and are fit for purpose.

Amazon are indeed the best provider but traditional wisdom still applies, good system design, failure/recovery planning and calculating the costs of the potential risk versus the spend to prevent it.

The TLDR is, Amazon like any technology tool can be extremely reliable or you can still use it with an element of risk. How much time and money you spend on the tool will make all the difference.

In branding, you normally have a corporate font, which goes on signage, posters, logos, business cards, properly designed materials.

NTG does that. We only use the one, though. We don't have official font(s) for things like literature, just for the brand name.

      Umm...congratulations?

In branding, you normally have a corporate font, which goes on signage, posters, logos, business cards, properly designed materials.

Then you have a machine font, which can be one of the many installed ones or it could be a paid for one. This is up to each company.

Fonts do matter, they make one heck of a difference to a companies image, there are good reasons why you would want an obscure font.

As for the third party, tell them to use a different font, problem solved. Helvetica is a zero effort choice because its the default that most Macs start with same way that Arial of Calibri is on Windows.

      At bigger scale:

      https://skyfonts.com

A really good tool for getting the latest version of a font constantly.

      When combined with this:

      https://enterprise.monotype.com/?show=mls

That then handles your font licensing for everything you could possibly need.

For smaller scale, buy the fonts through a single account on one of these many font web stores and then install it manually, keep a record of the devices which have the font.

    • RE: How Do You Match Good Customers to Good Service Providers

Surely accountancy firms or building companies have the same issue? I'm not convinced this is an exclusively IT industry problem, I've seen this in loads of industries.

What Scott has left out completely in his post about size, is that it takes years absolute years to build up a partner network to call upon. I spend so much time building links and relationships and 9/10 there is a reason why it does not work out for either party but the 10th time, there is still a lot of link building that happens with that person or company.

The other key is, continuity, are there systems in place so that when staff change (I've seen this done horribly at big and small companies) does key knowledge depart with that staff member? Not skill or experience, knowledge. A very pointed question to ask is, so if my account manager "bob" moves on, what is the process for "jack" getting up to speed?

Someone linked me over to this imgur gallery. Very detailed collection of photographs and text, very well put together if you have any interest do check it out:

      http://imgur.com/a/TwY6q

I got about halfway through and found this:

This is 26-year-old Senior Reactor-Control Engineer Leonid Toptunov, one of the control room operators. He made a mistake when switching from manual to automatic control of the control rods, causing them to descend much farther into the core than intended. This resulted in an almost total shutdown of the reactor. Safety procedures required that the operators fully shutdown the reactor, as the RBMK became unstable at very low power. Unfortunately for the whole world, the Deputy Chief Engineer in charge that night - Anatoly Dyatlov - insisted that they continue. Over the next hour, the men struggled to bring the reactor up to power, disabling various safety systems in the process, and then began the test.

In this case, looking back management had set guidelines and standards, engineers had designed the system with protection and fail-safes, which were suitably over-ridden by the supervisor at the time.A quick check on Wikipedia reveals the same message. We've all made mistakes but have you had a time when you told someone "No, go ahead" and it turned out to be the wrong call?
