@Dashrender said in Using GNU\Linux on your workstation is rubbish:

I don't consider this quite a fair comparison. Linux distros are mostly made by and for techies. There need/desire for these tools to be included seems obvious. Windows on the other hand is meant for the masses, and those tools would be unused by 95% or more.
So sure - it's cool they are there, but that's about all.

Masses of whom? Windows was built for the rich to be able to spend their money on it, and to pay to get support for it. I wholeheartedly disagree with your stance here.

This connectivity makes life easier without having to do a damn thing from the user side of things besides their job.

Have you ever used Windows? Every day we make our money helping people use Windows because it isn't simple or obvious. Everything about it is hard, unnecessarily hard. You just forget because you have memorized how to do things.

The masses are exactly who Windows isn't for at all. ChromeOS, that's for the masses.

OH no - I completely agree with you Scott - It is hard, way harder than it needs to be.
don't take my comment as a bash on Linux distros... only on the specific comment that I was replying to, and why the lack of the mentioned tools don't matter.

So you're saying a system shouldn't have functionality because said functionality isn't heavily used? How many people using Windows 10 Pro are using the any of the bloatware that we are regularly using unfuckafy scripts to clean up windows?

      yeah pretty much!

As for the bloatware - come on - I didn't create the program, but I'm sure you know why that shit is there. If there is any Admin type bloatware included, please feel free to inform me of such.

Administrative software and bloatware are not the same thing. XBox on Windows 10 Pro or enterprise makes 0 sense. I can't off hand think of anything that would be administrative and bloatware-esk, I'm sure there is something somewhere but that wasn't the point I was making.

Since I've got you all here. What are your thoughts on Exchange server built in Esxi? I was told be someone with more experience than me recently that this is a bad idea, but wasn't given much insight into why or how.

The rule of thumb is to virtualize everything, and unless you have a really very good reason (like some custom card that couldn't be passed to a VM) would you then consider a physical installation.

      This is true.

      Both are true

Created media through Microsoft media creation tool
Runs that and it fails on product key, no way around it.
Is running Windows 10 1603 - atleast what he told me.

why is he using that? Isn't he being offered an update to 17xx or 18xx or 19xx inside Windows update? Why is he trying to use media creation tool?

      I Have no idea.

Is he booting from the media creation tool USB stick? or just running the upgrade from within windows off the usb?

This is where I'm confused; cause he goes into a file and runs a " Setup.exe " that open media creation.. then it fails

That does sound odd. Any why the USB stick? Try the media directly from Windows 10. Just download it and run it directly. It's fast (to download.)

My guess is the person is attempting to do an offline upgrade, and the upgrade is stopping because the installation is probably pirated.

We have a Leyard Planar (WallDirector) video wall which is 4x4 (so 16 screens).

It can support a bunch of different loadouts and up to 16 individual HDMI inputs. Each quadrant can go up to 4K (full 4x4 supports up to 10K).

      Might be worth a look.

      Per physical socket.

The Samsung DCT drives appear to be listed as compatible and would be what I would look at using if at all possible. They may be a bit more money compared to the consumer drives (EVOs) but are worth it (from a functionality standpoint).

I might end up just going with 6TB SAS spindle drives in a RAID10 to save on cost - provided the RAID controller can handle 8 drives in R10..

If it can't then it certainly won't be able to handle an SSD OBR5. . .

@stacksofplates said in Scripted visudo updates:

Just drop in a file with the sudo permissions there. A good convention is to name the file the user/group name and then put the user or group in the file with the permissions. It should be picked up by the system then. That's just the dump directory for configs so you don't have to edit /etc/sudoers

So would I simply drop a file with my Cmnd_Alias and users there?

Sorry (just looking to see an example)

Here's an example. The file could be called dustin:

      dustin ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

Gotcha, so yeah I'd just setup a touch and vi process to add a file to that location with my permissions.

      Thanks for the clarity.

Only have full backups, while functional is a limitation. I know of many places that can't wait minutes - hours at a time for a backup to operate so CR style backups are a must.

Also fuck you @VoIP_n00b starting with the personal attacks.

@Fredtx said in Virtualization when there is only one VM?:

Although I don't disagree with choosing virtualization over physical install, but what about small Dental or Medical practices who have a local DB where their practice management software resides? I'm guessing clients like that would just require additional training on how to login their hypervisor and into their vm? There's cases where they need to remote software support in their DB for software related issues?

You'd still virtualize, the administrative process is no different from the VM perspective compared to a physical install. Use RDP or whatever remote administrative tool you needed.

    • RE: Virtualization when there is only one VM?

RDP is a protocol, one that every system offers at a free level. Turning it on, and using it for solely administrative purposes (from an MS) perspective is without a doubt fine*.

As @Dashrender mentioned, trying to use the server console as a desktop would be a no-go (unless licensed). But the overall functionality and access portions are easy to setup and maintain.

You are intentionally doing it the hard way. No hypervisor is designed to use a full install media to turn up guests, even if they have an option for CDROM. Just put the ISO on there like you should.

Yup, just copy the iso to an available repo on the hypervisor and select the iso as boot media.
