Give us 3-4 months and i'll put you in contact with our MSP as they will be trying to sell us some hardware and SAN with a refresh, even after i've suggested better like Scale 😄

Might be suggesting a 3rd party review of the solution so look out for an E-mail NTG 😄

Do you have a write up of common purchasing mistakes to hand to management before hand?

I think @scottalanmiller could contribute a few points to that one as well!

I'll just print off his blog site that should do 😄

    • Hardware refresh and Selling the Solution

So the question is do we need a SAN, I don't think we do. But how do I sell/convince management that other options are available/cheaper and better (I like Scale and think they will good fit, 2-3 node cluster with a good DR plan)

      Few Details
One of my projects I'm on at the moment is finding a new supplier for a MPLS (we're using this solution as it's worked well for several years 10+). Part of this deal we will be getting some rack space in the DC and it's been mentioned that we should move our server+NAS into there.

Background on our current set-up (please remember this was sold to us and set-up before I arrived here 4+ years ago)
      3x Dell Servers
      1x Dell SAN

Running 12 VM's - DC, SQL Server, Finance & HR, Misc VM's and the biggie! Microsoft Dynamics GP, and Citrix XenApp
58 Sites all access this and run live off the Citrix as we do a lot of Account sales to farms so the store need up to date account information so they don't sell stuff to people on hold.

Now the suggestion has already been made that we need a refresh and it's ready been mentioned SAN! from my days on here and SW I know with only 20-30 VM's and 3-4 Hosts we most probably don't need a SAN, but we do need HA, as the SQL/Dynamics/Citrix need to be running 100% during office hours as down time (even 10minutes) could loss us a £50K order.

Hope it all makes sense (I does in my head but never been good at getting down on paper and across to people like my MPLS proposal but that's another story lol 😄 )

    • AH! - XenOrchestra Backups and Restore

OK so it's my fault for deleting the wrong VM! but why can't I restore from my XenOrchestra backups? It's showing 6 Delta available, it shows importing in XenCenter while restoring but when it finishes it just vanishes.

This is the log regarding the restore:-

      sudo curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Jarli01/xenorchestra_installer/master/xo_install.sh | bash

      Solved it.

So bloody simple to lol. Watched the install script running and saw an error when connecting to GITHUB with connection refused.

So changed the gateway of the VM to our FTTC connection and all went through so looks like our Firewall was blocking something.

    • Windows 10 Pro Volume License (KMS) to OEM/BIOS

Got a issue after all the problem Microsoft had with the activation servers. Some of our machines are reporting the license will Expire.

Now the problem is several years ago we had a KMS server..... Now we don't 🙂

I've found a few commands online that are meant to change a KMS machine back to OEM/BIOS but this laptop is being a pain.

We're replacing it for the user to get them going again. So when I get it on my desk i'll post the commands I've tried and the errors i'm getting.

    • RE: Run virt-manager on Windows 10

@hobbit666 said in Run virt-manager on Windows 10:

OK so got a connection but got a few other problem.
First one was i got this.

      Unable to connect to libvirt.

You need to install openssh-askpass or similar to connect to this host.

Solved by running this sudo virt-manager --no-fork

Or a permanent solution was to run sudo apt-get install ssh-askpass ssh-askpass-gnome

OK so after playing and re-insyalling from scratch on both the KVM host and Ubuntu on my machine. This is because i'm running everything as root ... oops.

So added a "user" to the KVM while i was installing and now when i use Virt-Manager we are all good.
Also as @black3dynamite suggested i've generated a SSH key and now i can just connect and go.

However i did get a error when creating the connection on Virt-Manager using the "users" account
authentication unavailable: no polkit agent available to authenticate action 'org.libvirt.unix.manage'

This was solved by adding the user on the KVM host to the libvirt group.
