    • RE: Post Your Throwback IT Pics

The year is 2004, one of my friends just got the new Motorola Razr phone, and it had a camera!!! I was in high school and able to dual enroll in the new fangled Wireless Netwoking Technology Program. I had just received my A+ certification, and was getting ready to take Network +.

I know the pose is lame, but I was 16 years old so give me a break! I am the one with the fro standing up.

    • You need to get cloud certified!

      Here is my reasoning:

      Value

The job market is really paying a premium for cloud certifications and obtaining an entry level cert could increase your value by as much as $20k yearly and in some cases even more. Not only will you be able to demand a higher rate, you will be much more likely to get hired.

      Basic Knowledge

We are all using cloud solutions in one way or another even if not with AWS or Azure. Understanding hot do things in a secure way is essential to your current role. Even if only running a few Vultr servers, are you managing security rules properly? Are you utilizing a private network for management traffic in addition to the public facing service?

      No excuses

AWS offers free training for the AWS Cloud Practicioner Certification. The cert cost $100 to take and you dont have to go to a testing center. I mean you are talking about $100 for something that will easily make you $10k a year more valuable.

      Cloud compliments not replaces

You are not replacing your current skill or specialization. You are just adapting it to cloud infrastructure. Maybe your job doesnt change much whether its cloud or on prem, but it is all about selling yourself. This is what HR and managers are looking for now, Cloud "insert techy title here"

    • RE: Best way to maintain some remote control but not absolute?

This is the most long and drawn out thread for something simple:

      1. I feel like you are doing this for free or really cheap. If that is the case...walk away immediately. You sound like a young, excitable guy. I was there once, but after you get used a few times. You won't be so willing to help for nothing or very little.
      2. Pick a remote control tool. I've used Deskroll in the past and it is really nice because the user can launch a one time .exe file and has the option to install the client at the end so you always have access. If they prefer not to, then that's ok too. You can just send them the .exe everytime you need access.
      3. I think you don't need idrac access. I think you are being way too paranoid. You are talking about a business with 6 computers. If they are paying you by the incident then make them sweat a little. Otherwise they see you fix the problem in 10 or 15 minutes and they don't appreciate your work. You can always remote in and gain SSH access if you need to do so. If everything is too easy and streamline they will never realize your value. Many small businesses think IT is a waste of money anyway.

The fact that he is out of the one man shop and onto something bigger is an additional factor as well.

      A HUGELY positive factor.

oh yeah of course. I dont know how people get stuck in 1 man shops for so long

Because it's often really comfortable and once you are in you tend to feel badly for the company because leaving seems impossible for them to handle. So you tend to stay.

We had one guy on ML where I literally felt like flying to where he worked and going in there and telling his boss to fuck off, it was so bad lol.

We are so lucky! Thanks John P. Hoover for taking these pictures. No real damage! No flooding!

If that tree fell the other way we would have lost our entire house. That tree is only 10 feet from our house.

    • GoPhish

I finally got a chance to setup GoPhish. I sent out a test phishing email out to our IT department and I must say it works pretty well. Social Engineering is really easy with GoPhish. You can clone any website automatically including OWA with a fake link that our employees should catch.

You can also easily clone legit emails and legit users. I want to test some CEO fraud since that is the latest popular scam. Oh I was also able to pull a csv from Active Directoy and import the entire organization.

Also there were no gas shortages because the a state of emergency was called days ahead of time so gas was made available here.

Being able to get plywood, gas, food, and water is a huge morale boost. No one had to go without it.
