@wrcombs I've never seen that before. Weird stuff

Only happens if you try to set two default gateways.

Seen this with p2v type conversions too. Old adapter still exists in the process, when you add the new virtual nic, you can see the message as the two 'configurations' exist with the same gateway.

Stressing over a work decision where I have no information to make a decision.

And you are stuck with the decision because....?

The folk above me are fighting over control of various parts of the IT department. I've been told the teams are being broken up and moved to different areas of the larger business. There will be two IT areas - and I've been asked which I want to go to. But, I've not been told what I will be doing for either. I don't know what the job will entail, the results I need to provide, what I need to perform or the technology I'll be using, who the team are, if I will be managing and leading a team like I do now, none of it.

So, I am being asked to pretty much flip a coin as I know nothing about each role on either side. How can they ask me which I want to take without any data to make that choice. Hence, stressing about it.

Go to the US, this is the time to go. Huge shortage of workers. People will actually fight over you.

I'm working for a US company remotely from the UK. I would like to visit the US, but not live. I think I've decided which route to take now though based on one reason. My current boss will be moving to side 1, and he is sometimes like a micromanager, so I'm going to take my chances with side 2, which I know nothing about. Worst case, job hunt.

Your mistake was trying to be nice. Learn from that. Next time, resign after finding a new role, tell them when you are going.

And the counter offer was immediately refused.

So if he wasn't willing to negotiate maybe the position wasn't worth looking into.

That would be my take. He wasn't able to make you an offer worth you taking. It is what it is. You aren't desperate or out of work, you are just looking for a place to move up in the world. If they couldn't match what you make currently, it probably wasn't much of a step up.

That is how I viewed it as well.

Too many jobs get into the mindset that everyone that they hire is desperate and just happy to get an offer. They often forget that the people that they should be wanting to hire need incentive to want to work for them.

And they should want to hire people who are already working - should be asking why aren't they working?

Surprisingly, a tonne of companies actually only want people who are desperate and basically unemployable. Why? I'm not sure. Somehow they think that cheaper labour is better than good labour.

This is why I like my current employer so much and have stuck around. Motivated people who are here because they really really want to be.

I've seen a few places only hire desperate folks. Not sure why, I imagine it's something pathetic though like thinking that as you have helped them out in a tricky situation where they struggled and had no job... That the person would be more loyal. Silly.

If I were desperate and somebody used that to take advantage and pay me less than standard, they would have no respect from me and I would use them for a pay packet whilst searching for the job that does value me.

    • Disk2VHD M.2

      Hey folks,

I have a workstation running an M.2 SSD for the OS (Windows 10). I'd like to P2V this using Disk2VHD, temporarily, and run as a VM on an Windows Server 2016 host with Hyper-V role enabled.

I don't think though that it would work... am I correct?

I think Hyper-V can work with IDE and SCSI for VMs, but not M.2...
So I presume this wouldn't work.

      What do ya'll think?

@Jimmy9008 Yeah heard that this morning too, not seen any reports yet on BBC etc.

Yeah, I get that things can happen. But the report I read said the power issue took out the live and backup systems. Our backup systems/DR is the other side of the country... no way can 1 x UPS or a bad generator in the live site kill both systems...

Were BA running live and DR within the same building, off of the same UPS and generator?...

That's what I mean; I just don't see how a UPS or power issue in their datacenter could have caused the problem. Something else must have been the cause. Or a REALLY bad design/infrastructure engineer designed them.

They are. They're specialist shelf stackers. They'll be much better than you at stacking shelves because of their practice and experience. Their rate of dropping cans of beans will be much better than yours.

Ok, I can agree with this... but that means specialist != difficult. Specialist = dedicated to only one job, even if easy...

Am I on the right page now?

It absolutely can mean difficult. Do you think Exchange is easy? Exchange admins in enterprises are normally specialist. This is the only task they do all day, every day. I wouldn't call it easy.

Yes, it can mean difficult, but, doesn't have to...

Thanks folks. Cool. I always assumes specialist = always difficult. Rare. Few people have the skills etc... not, can be easy or hard, but, has to be the only thing you focus on.

There are often broad specialization as well. We have Desktop Specialists on our team. Their only focus is supporting desktops, this can be applications on the desktops, hardware, OS, etc. If it's an application they aren't familiar with it gets escalated to someone that is on my team.

So.... I am a specialist!!! Woop Woop.

I specialise in being a SMB Generalist. 😉

    • Pentest - Who would you recommend?

      Hey folks,

We are based in London and are interested in having a pentest performed. Don't mind where the person is based as its testing the vulnerability of our sites and services externally anyway.

      Who would you recommend?

I am not looking for an MSP or reseller or a VAR. We don't want somebody that is only looking to do a few 'checks' and then suggest we entirely swap out our firewall, routers, switches, access points etc as they are actually resellers looking to line their pockets with their own 'solutions'.

What we are looking for is for somebody to look at our attack vector from outside and point at what could be improved. We would be paying for that report. Any work done, if any, would be done by a similarly skilled consultant in that specific area or internally if possible.

So, thoughts? This is not a job posting, this is a discussion to see who the community has used before and would recommend.

      Best,
      Jim

    • RE: Interviewing Candidates for a Jr. IT Systems Administrator Position- Good Questions to Ask?

Since this is 70% helpdesk, ask some situation type questions to see how they think. The technical answer is not important, more the process.

Q: "A local user within the office cannot open a program, its a program that you have not used before, they have a request to the helpdesk to fix it and get it working, how would you find the answer and solve their issue?"

A: "Ask my manager." - not good

A: "Erm, maybe, erm... well, erm..." - not good. (Depending on what you are after if entirely new to IT)

A: "I would visit the user and ask them a few key questions. 1) has the software previously worked, or is new 2) if they can show me how to replicate the error 3) If other people use the software and if they are currently using it totally fine. That shows me the issue is located with just them, or is a larger group issue, and confirms if the software previously worked or never worked for them. If the whole team cannot access the software I would check our knowledgebase to see if a central server controls the software to make sure its up. If its only them, I would check they are connected to the network bla bla bla..."

Seeing how they think helps. The tech stuff can be taught.

    • RE: Question regarding lab setup for Starwind Virtual San Hyperconverged install on Hyper-V Server 2016

For a lab, you can also get additional space by altering the setup here.

      CSV1 on Node1 & Node2.
      CSV2 on Node2 & Node3.
      CSV3 on Node3 & Node1.

You now have more space that can be used, whilst still keeping a redundant copy of all data available.

I hated OneDrive and moved away from it. I seem to remember using Sharepoint online, creating a folder with permissions to the respective group, then using the 'folder link' adding that to the business one drive app to sync... then that added the favorite. Though, I did move off of it.

    • RE: So we are leaving..............

The market is having an initial shock due to UK actually leaving. In the long run we will do better than fine.

No way in hell will the Middle East want to see the UK economy (and property) crash, as they would lose hundreds of billions. No way will German car manufacturers want to lose the 20%-30% sales from the UK, the French car manufacturers too. Supermarkets such as ALDI and LIDL are heavily invested in the UK and would want to keep that income coming in. Others too.

Large companies will force the EU to keep trade with the UK, as without trading with the 5th largest economy the EU will not have the funds to survive and bale out Greece, Italy so on so forth. Without the UK 'footing the bill', they probably wont be able to anyway.
