Why is everyone making a big deal about cost. $300-500 startup with $50-80 on going for a hobby isn't bad at all. That is almost exactly the same as a PS4, and way cheeper than PC gaming.
If you don't need to buy every new game immediately PC gaming is far, far cheaper.
It isn't $300-500 to start with $50-80 ongoing. It is $300-500 to start with $100-150 every time you want to add a unit to your army. You need a specific sized army to be competitive. The costs of the books and the new releases adds up too.
Ahh, competitive, that is the difference. I thought we were talking about building a small army and playing some small games at the hobby shop. I used to play MTG with a group of friends all though high school, but it slowly ended up being a battle of the pocket book, and less about casual gaming so I eventually just quit.
Battle of the pocket book, one of the biggest reasons I stopped playing Magic. Back in my day, without that darn interwebs telling us the price of them cardboard cards, we used to just hand cards we weren't using to friends. Now these darn kids crack out TI-83s to make sure their trades aren't losing them cash.
The initial startup is about the same as a console startup, you're right. But the thing that draws most people away from wargaming is the added time cost. When you buy a console, you plug it in and start playing. Instant gratification (hello Magic players!). When you buy wargames, you spend hours building and painting. That's some people's thing (I love building, could do without painting), but not everyone's.
Also, a friend of mine has about 3-4 fully painted armies, and is starting a new one this year. I have about half of the force I'd like to have in one army in order to play him on a point level that we'd both be happy with, so I feel pressured to buy buy buy. If you and your mates are all starting small together, this isn't as big an issue however.
There are other wargames out there that cost far less money and time (looking at you X-Wing and Warmachine/Hordes). Again, whatever your preference is, play that.
This is why I have moved to contained board games. 1 time Cost, no barrier to get friends to join in and play, and no on going cost other than expansions.

RE: Kiosk - Whitelist Only?
I would probably just use IE's Kiosk mode, whitelist the sites and password protect it. Then setup a startup shortcut launch IE in Kiosk mode on startup.

Over the years I've been asked a few times "where is the Internet?", I usually just say Branson, Missouri. A place I only knew about because of The Simpsons.
I'm less than a 2 hour drive from Branson. Can confirm the internet is no where near that place. However, if you like dinner at 4:30 and Yakov Smirnoff, we have you covered.

I played with x10 equipment back in the day and it worked for me. I haven't used the cameras, but you can setup a motion sensor outside that turns on a light inside, and even turn on a few a few seconds appart like someone is moving through the house. It was reliable, affordable, and kinda fun to setup.
How very "Home Alone" of you
We had all of our network gear in our College apartment on a trigger with a switch at everyones desk. That way we could reboot the 802.11b router every 2 hours with out standing up.

RE: Is Windows Going After Mac OSX with WSL for Developers?

What I don't understand is why people use Mac OSX for development or why WSL would be nice. In both cases I feel like people want Linux but just aren't using it. Why not? If you want Linux, why not work on Linux?
For me personally I have used all 3 platforms and for me, I like the Mac for the Host as it seems to be the most user friendly, everything just works, and I can focus on the task at hand OS. I then run VM's for Windows and Linux on top for whatever I need to get done. I like the hardware, I like the OS, I love the gestures on the mouse pad, and I like the 8hour battery life.

RE: Company's TV - Show your own stuff during commercials?

I'm not sure if it exists for TV, but I know you can not do this with audio legally. You can play a local radio station in your lobby for example, because that station is paying rights to that music and paying "jukebox fee's." If you buy music, and replay it in your business and you are not paying the recording industry you will get hit with a fine eventually. I have seen cigar lounges, restaurants, and retail stores all hit by people that make money on the side by collecting bounties for turning in businesses. That being said, I have never heard of it happening with television, but I am guessing it comes up in that "This broadcast can not be retransmitted with out express written consent" junk that pops up before a sporting event.
It's not retransmitted, though. It's playing it "sometimes." The same logic there would potentially say that you are not allowed to turn it off just after a show or that anyone, even people at home, cannot switch channels during commercials.
I agree, but I would argue, if I own a CD, and wanted to play it in my store, that I own, I would have the right to do that, but that isn't the case. TV shows and broadcasting are paid by commercials, and removing those commercials for your gain, while also getting the gain of the television content is likely to upset the people that provide that content. I'm just saying in the audio world they will go after people who do this, and to be aware that similar restrictions may exist for TV, however I am not sure of a specific case.

RE: HVAC Filters
I have had a HVAC guy tell me the expensive ones cause too much resistance on the blower motor and can cause your system to wear out early. Buy the cheap ones and replace them often.

RE: Windows update "Checking for updates..." for hours...
I had a Windows 7 SP1 lock up on me a few weeks ago. I did everything in this thread 1-2 times and it eventually started working. I let it sit 24 hours before I started and It wouldn't move until I installed the hot fixes.

RE: Weekend Plans
@MattSpeller I just can't do the Cammel back thing. I have a Drink Tank and a Trek Transport. I can easily pack lunch and beer for 2. Honestly, if I had more free time and better access to camping sites, I could pack a tent, a grill, and a few chairs too, but I digress.

RE: Weekend Plans
Tomorrow is my birthday, so I am celebrating Saturday. I plan on riding bikes with my wife, filling a growler with craft beer, and secretly drink it out of water bottles while riding around town. Beer + Bikes + day drinking is the best Saturday possible.

RE: CPUs, Cores and Threads: How Many Processors Do I Have?
