i'm an older worker now and people think you don't know anything because you don't know about the latest xyz.
truth be told, I don't know about the latest xyz because i've seen that type of thing before and it had limited market appeal and folded after 5 years

getting from 25 yo to 50 yo doesn't take long, you should always have your ears open ready to learn and always treat people respectfully.

I just hate these bloody upgrades or whatever you want to call them.

When I was younger it was exciting/interesting, now it's just a PITA.

I hate them because I know they will move or make you have to do something unimportant, that you have always done, be done differently. Where's notepad? Oh it's called Scribbler now. Where's Windows Explorer? Oh it's called File Finder.

Why do we have to learn new names for the same old crap.

Imagine doing that with cars. Press the accelerator, oh it's called the Make it faster button now!

I don't care about the new tech tricks and improvements, I just want to use my PC and get my work done so my day is as stress free as possible.

good morning, 9:22am.

got the word yesterday that we're expecting back on site from the 12th onwards. such ashame, the past many months have been some of the most productive, interesting & joyful with regards to work, of my last 10 years.

normally i move from site to site everyday, forgetting what I did last and wasting time settling into the newly arrived at site each time I arrive.

the past few months i've rekindled my interest in IT coz I had time to sit in one place, complete tasks & investigate new things.

I'm going to spend the time between now and the 12th trying to work out how I can run my work life from the cloud, so everytime I arrive at a new workplace, my desktop will still have tasks, jobs, notes open from the previous site, if that makes any sense.

and what the hell is a Stroopwafel??? ^^^

they asked for a rate sheet incase they need me to come in and help with something.
i'm loathed to help at all following the way i've been treated.
if i do help, the rate will be astronomical.

it's a joke.

But I don't get the joke because 400 errors can be found by division into any year. A joke is only funny if it makes sense. If the joke depends on people "not getting it" and just laughing because they are confused, that's not a joke. I get not over analyzing jokes as they depend on a certain suspension of disbelief. But there has to be a basis for the joke in the first place. The core of this joke is that "5" is the magic number and by applying that magic number to the year, it becomes something funny.

But that the 5 is totally without foundation means that the foundation of the joke is missing. The suspension of disbelief would be understanding that you don't dig into that 2020 is arbitrary based on a randomly assigned calendaring system, that the number didn't always come out to be 2020, etc. We don't dig into that stuff for the joke. But the 5 is the joke. It's the whole joke. If the 5 isn't significant, the joke literally doesn't exist.

If you can reword the joke to be "did you know 404 can be dividied into any rational number?", that's not funny. And that there are tons and tons of error codes using HTML errors so every year has a joke like this makes it even less meaningful.

To make a joke like this would require...

1. That the thing wrong with the year is related to the 404 error (missing / not found), not just being an error since essentially every number is an error. The joke only works if the specific error of 404 relates.
2. That the modifier "5" be in some way significant to make it at least a perceived "coincidence."

That's just basic joke making.

You can see... the assumption about what would make this a joke takes so much work, it was all missed. A joke should be obvious, it should require tons of explanation to find what's supposed to be the funny part.

Ah fooey. It's people like you that killed Vaudeville.

Laughter is good, light heartedness is good, there are so many things in life that don't warrant thought and consideration, that joke was one of them, if it's found amusing then great, if not move on.

I actually thought this year was going to be the year of the optometrist.

how often do you work on a problem for some time, then finally decide to post asking for help and while you're typing, the answer, or at least new ideas, spring to mind and you end up solving the problem.
