Let's see here. Graduated from Wayne College University of Akron with an Associates in Computer Repair and Network Technologies.... in 1999. I did get my first IT job through contacts I made while at school, so thatwasn't totally worthless. That was a terrible experience, and I stepped away from IT for way to long.

Between 2001 and 2007 I worked a number of different jobs either doing shipping/receiving or driving a truck.

Started working for a medium sized herbalist operation in early 2008 as one of two IT people. It's down to just me now, and I'm planning to look for something else starting the beginning of next year. Don't like the idea of leaving the people, but professionally it's way past time to move on. At least when I do, they'll be in a much better position tech wise than when I started here.

@aidan_walsh Nice, this is who we have in Rochester....

I'm not usually one for flavoured spirits but that Apple Pie Monshine sounds great.

Oh no, it's disgusting. Moonshine is like a new bizarre fake term in the US for "utterly shit sprits". No one would put the label moonshine on a product if it was palatable. THat's for the hipster kids to think that they are drinking something illegal when, in fact, it's just overpriced garbage.

So true. The only real moonshine comes from a bootlegger up in the hills, in an unlabeled mason jar. I am very fortunate to be semi-connected to some rural moonshine aficionados, and what they bring over on holidays is the truth.

Same here, I drink actual moonshine and it is awesome. What is labeled that is stores is just a gimmick. Nothing like moonshine in taste OR in actuality.

Exactly. Real 'shine has a super clean flavor that is inimitable. And if you want to test the authenticity, pour a tiny bit in the jar lid and light it... should be a pure blue flame, anything else is bs.

I expect to see some at ML Con2!

This is likely still illegal in some parts of the country, ha ha.

Everything not taxable is illegal in NY.

    • AlienVault OSSIM Agent install how-to

I've added some Debian machines that needed the OSSIM agent tools installed. The process is just a little different than the documents state, so I thought I should add it here.

In your OOSIM interface, go to ENVIRONMENT -> DETECTION -> AGENTS and click ADD AGENT
      alt text

After the agent is added, click on the key icon for the agent you just added, and copy the line of random junk that it gives you.

      alt text

Now on the client machine. Install the prerequisites.

      sudo apt-get install inotify-tools build-essential

Download, unzip, and install the OSSIM source.

      wget https://bintray.com/artifact/download/ossec/ossec-hids/ossec-hids-2.8.3.tar.gz
      tar xf ossec-hids-2.8.3.tar.gz
      cd ossec-hids-2.8.3
      sudo ./install.sh

The installer will ask you for some things none of the guides I use were up to date with. For this, we just want the client, and it will ask for the server IP or FQDN. Besides that, accept the defaults and let it run.

The client now needs the agent key entered, and the service restarted.

      sudo /var/ossec/bin/manage_agents
      I

Paste the key we copied from the server.

      y
      Enter
      Q
      /etc/init.d/ossec restart

Finally, we need to restart the HIDS service on the server. This should be in HIDS CONTROL in the same screen we were in before.

      alt text

      All done.

So, how about adding network into that management stack of yours?

      oh don't forget drunk!

Me and my AWD wagon plan on doing exactly that if it ever snows here.

When it actually does snow in Georgia, generally there isn't enough of the stuff to matter.

The classic joke for northern truck drivers who get pulled over after it snows in the southern states. "You call this snow, I just drove through the Great Lakes snow belt, this ain't no thing!"

Backups I run while nary a shout,

Well sure. It is popular. Is it the most stable platform? No, it was never meant to be.

What defines stability in this case?

Knowing security updates won't break config files for one.

I have not had any issues with this on Linux in a long time.

Debian/Ubuntu/Mint (all the same base) are the only major system that feels the need to replace config files on you. If you're doing updates via 'apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y', it actually stops to ask you about replacing config files. Something that just doesn't happen on RedHat/CentOS.
