Can you break down the hardware better? I'm unclear if you have an OpenStack computer structure AND a CEPH one or if that is all on the same hardware?

If the former, why not keep CEPH and only move the top layer from OpenStack to XS?

Also, what is driving the move away from OpenStack? Just a desire for simplicity?

I have four hosts that are all OpenStack and Ceph Nodes. Bad design on all counts. I wish they were separated.

Why do you feel the need to separate the storage and compute? What business reason exists to justify the added cost and management headache?

I get that you currently have a management headache, and I do like the idea of moving to something more reliable. XenServer with halizard and XenOrchestra would be a great drop-in replacement, it's what I'm migrating to at least.

The problem is that when kids walk home creepers can stalk them without being visible to the kids themselves.

The range of RFID is really short (centimetres). Essentially you'd see the kids long long long long long before you got an RFID blip.

Oh now, it is very long. Even in the 1990s the VNC team at Cambridge could be tracked anywhere in the building with them. I know the ones in our car go like a hundred feet or more. I know that grocery stores have them that go ten feet or more.

You all are working on getting me started on the things you can do with software defined radios, that you can pickup for $25 on ebay. I might not be able to reliably read an RFID card from a long way away, but you better believe I can get a response. Remember the people that got bluetooth working from a mile away? It really isn't that hard to do if you can do a little bit of math.

@scottalanmiller I'd say that's actually what Google+ is. Linkedin and Facebook may be what every talks about, but more tech happens on G+, at least from the bits and piece I observe.

      isn't that dead?

Well, Google(Alphabet?) seems to be ignoring it currently. I'd be upset if they killed it, even if I'm one of the few that would be.

Yeah that's a big mental. Encouraging people to send them in if caught is one thing. But encouraging people to go out looking for them seems a little reckless.

"Hey kids, guess what we are going to do this weekend... we are going spider hunting!"

My wife grew up on a Texas 1 parcel ranch. She raised money as a young teenager by catching rattle snakes for the Rattle Snake Roundup. Train them right, have the anti-venom readily available, and maybe. Don't know that I'd actively encourage doing that tho.

Was it the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater per chance?

I'm not positive, but I'd be very surprised if it wasn't the one in Sweetwater.

Down to about 350 PMs left to sort through. Man that is time consuming. But that's over a thousand knocked out, already.

Surprised how many people have nuked accounts that I had conversations with (e.g. were not bots or 1PWers) have deleted their accounts, both end users and vendors.

Something is up. I haven't figured out what it is exactly yet I don't think.

The thing I think that started pushing people away was the Spiceworks people posting for companies. It just doesn't work in the community they've built. I have a feeling it's more than just that tho.

Kentucky Governor declares state of emergency due to snow accumulations.

      From: http://www.kentucky.com/news/local/counties/fayette-county/article56019145.html
"Freezing rain began turning to sleet about 6 a.m. in the south, with moderate snow on the leading edge of the storm, the weather service reported on Twitter. Just before 8 a.m., the heavy snow began to pick up, pelting parts of the state at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour.

Kentucky State Police posted on Twitter about 2:30 p.m. that multiple wrecks in Rockcastle County have closed all lanes of Interstate 75 for 12 miles between London and Mount Vernon. The estimated delay was two to four hours."

For anyone that has had to commute through a snow belt by one of the Great Lakes, that's known as "Tuesday". Worth maybe a yawn. Kinda crazy how different the reactions and preparedness are just 200 miles south.

Honestly, I bet they have a massive turnover rate just from their entry level staff getting married and not working any more. The "went to college to find a spouse, didn't, and am now just working an entry level job so that I can meet people and get married and stop working" demographic is strong and the general business-preparedness suggests that that is the common goal.

Is that really a thing? I've only met one person like that before.

Hoping I can avoid it, but might be looking for another job soon. Wouldn't mind finding a place like that...... I may be becoming the creepy old widower tho.

I'll probably have to turn it over to them (while filming) and the pursue legal action. Otherwise they will send the account to collections for the fees, and possibly even back charge for cable modem rental for 3 years. ($10/month + $300 fee).

Do not turn it over to them. Don't even talk to them anymore. Just head for small claims court. This is theft, and you have the evidence.

Where have you been this week?

      http://mangolassi.it/topic/7610/installing-minecraft-server-on-centos-7-with-oracle-java-8

@art_of_shred has been playing on it every day, in fact.

I'll have to see if it works on the Win7 client when I get home tonight.

Works with the standard client, wherever it runs.. the Java client. We have been testing it from Windows 10 but the standard client is the same everywhere - the miracle of Java 🙂

Is it open to the public, or do we need an invite?

In middle and high school we had something like that. It was a hand coded console graphics and batch programs that would run what you chose. You're taking me back. It might have originally been made on a program like that, but the students quickly learned how to customize it.

World of Warships started a sponsored contest this week. Complete objectives and get stuff you normally have to pay for. It's a free game, so I am the product. Still great fun going back to old ships you've moved on from, and getting some slight rewards for it.

Swearing in my head at Windows updates that got installed on a Wednesday instead of Tuesday. I WAITED TO START TRANSFERING MY BACKUP SERVER TO THE NEW HOST BECAUSE I KNOW UPDATES ARE TUESDAY MICROSOFT! Grrr. Looks like the transfer got nixed near the end because I've got 612GB out of 680GB. Guess it's time to start the rsync and wait.

You need X11. Not necessarily a GUI. I know it's odd, but X11 does not a GUI make. My first IT experience was with engineers doing 3D modeling work on a headless IRIX server. Try isntall just X11, maybe?
