    • RE: OpenIO

nice find ... I found some documentation on the OpenIO website itself .... Can't think of any usage scenario for us, or our clients... the minuscule quantum of data we handle does not warrant object based storage... but, very interesting product none-the-less ..

      Thanks Scott

    • RE: Vembu Desktop Backup for Free

Vembu has been in the business for many years now .. they started of with a peer-to-peer (I'm not sure if this is the right term) backup software, and it was pretty good ... I haven;t used any of the products recently, but based on my experience, their new free backup certainly warrants a try.. Infact, I think I'll do that today ..

Which one do you think would be the simplest, given that I really just need very basic monitoring?

I'd say OpenNMS ... It has a GUI based installer for the Windows platform ..

      You could also try

      • PingPlotter
      • Capsa Free (It's very easy to install)

@StrongBad said in Simple but Effective Packet Loss Monitor?:

I'm not looking for a big package or anything, just something simple that can check a few addresses and shoot out an email or something if packet loss happens.

If your definition of few addresses is > 100, then : -

      • Zabbix
      • OpenNMS
      • Zenoss

umm... . not sure if this belong here, but has anyone used Zerto ? Any indication of the price-points ? also, are there any similar product(s)/solution(s) that're free of cost ?

XenOrchestra does that for free. Although limited value, as DRBD does this better for free as well. You only use this for specific situations where you don't want the full replication.

From what I read-up on Zerto, is that it can do cross hypervisor replication ... I'm not sure whether DRBD does that ..

Ugh, someone has Big Bang Theory on in the background. I can hear them getting basic physics wrong. I hate the overtly pretentious yet incorrect way that they do that show.

Most people think that I'd love this show cause "Hey, you're a techie, I bet you love The Big Bang Theory" ... fact is, I don't the this show .. never did .. it's cliched .. and plays on stereo-types .

What show doesn't play on stereotypes?

      • Dexter (How many Serial killers who moonlight as Forensic Analysts, do you know of)

      • Breaking Bad (How many school chemistry teacher turned Meth manufacturers do you know ?)

      • Game Of Thrones (How many Khaleesis are you acquainted with ? and how many dragons have you ridden ?)

      • Americans (How many Russian Commi spies live in your neighborhood ? )

on second thoughts - I did ride a dragon once .... actually, she rode me ... 😛

Well ... If you factor in the cost of an 5V adapter, a case, and SHIPPING, it works-out to $66

The Dual Core Mali 400-MP2 GPU is atleast 5-6 years old ... The Odriod C2 (For around the same ... maybe a tad more) would eat the Pine64 for breakfast .. lunch ... and dinner

      Installing TeamViewer for Ubuntu.

Don't know if that is available for Linux (yet), but have you tried AnyDesk? AFAIK from a group of former TeamViewer devs.

I've used Anydesk recently... It's okay, but not as polished as teamviewer

Demo is plainly listed, I'm guessing that is just put there to say, hey if you want to do this, you should really build from sources.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you'll read the following : -

***Important note on these Virtual Appliances

Please note that these virtual appliances are for demonstration/testing purposes and not recommended for regular production uses, particularly for more than a few hosts depending on local system resources. The OpenVAS scanner is resource intensive and may take a long time to start on slower systems, especially when run as a VM on laptops.***

From what I remember, it was easy to set up... Just pick the Subnets (or individual servers) that you want to scan, and pick what scans you want it to do... Start the scan, and wait for it to generate a report.

      How effective/accurate is it ?

@Veet I've heard of eXo Platform too! Is it good? I also remember that they have OnlyOffice add-on for document editing

Yes, it's amazing, if you like a team-collaboration with a "Social Network" twist to it .. But, don't expect features like the ones you see on Yammer .. Also, if you're doing a on-site installation, then you may find it heavy on the System requirements (4gb ram)
