That's the method we use to allow anonymous relay for devices on the network.

Not sure why this is assumed. I took it to mean they wanted similar features of a pihole which include adding specific filters and reports.

Sorry, that was ambiguous. I meant that he wasn't looking "for the pihole", not that he was or wasn't looking for the whitelist/blacklist features.

I just meant that PiHole with CloudFlare was an obvious, super cheap, perfect solution - but the OP didn't want it so would need something to replicate it without being it in name.

It genuinely makes things a lot easier. It's really easy to get up and running. Rancher makes federation really easy. Monitoring and central logging can be handled through a single helm chart. mTLS can also be handled through a single helm chart. Service discovery means your networking just works. Developing containerized apps is multiple times easier than developing legacy apps. 12 factor apps make setup easy.

It's much easier than using config management/infrastructure automation to manage multiple vms.

Yes I set it up in my lab and used it on some equipment/vms without issue.

Seems reasonable to me. And Debian is super conservative in most cases. I don't see cause for concern in this case. And remember "based on" is kind of "for your information". Lots of things are "based on" unreleased products before. Most cars are "based on" models that never got to production. It's the quality of the final release, not the process of getting to the release, that ultimately matters.
