    OK?

Just how it is, they've always labeled it that.

    I knew that - I wasn't sure what @black3dynamite intention was?

One thing you haven't taken into consideration though - is the time value of money.

But I have. It takes moments to do the math that this is a bad idea. In any case we're discussing a business who is installing a new phone e system and phones.

So the business has the money, but would it be better to expense with however many thousands upfront? At least in my business they would opt to make the spend today, and then they'd write it off over the usable life of the equipment.

With that, yes it's still a capital expense. And hopefully that expense was planned for and already budgeted.

That had been the typical situation here until recently. Much to my utter amazement we've leased two pretty major pieces of gear - CT machine and our entire printer fleet. I know in the case of printers, we'll be saving money over what we were paying our previous provider, the purchase option might have saved us a small amount, but we would have to have taken out a loan, and the interest would have made the end spend nearly the same.

Anyone know of a way in which I can run the Windows RSAT tools from my non domain joined W10 PC?

I go from client to client and I'm hoping to be able to run the Windows admin tools from my PC.

Or anyone know of an alternate program that may work?

That is totally not how any of that works.

About the only thing that I can think of is to simply right click and run as.

But you also will run into the problem that RSAT tools are different on ever system

Nah, that'll only run the app as whoever on the local PC, it doesn't parse auth credentials to the external entity.

This works "runas /netonly /user:domain\username "mmc dsa.msc /server=REMOTEDC" but you have to run it from a cmd/powershell box & wait for the password prompt. It's also fiddly if you want to work in different apps that reside within different domains.

That's the beauty of security. Some outsider can't just come in to someone's network with their own hardware and successfully connect from all the RSAT tools.

Isnt that what PAW is for?

    What is PAW?

    CLI is grate and quicker
I used just one command "fwconsole ma upgradeall" and it's upgrading all modules

I really need to start learning commands

After doing the upgrade command, you need to tell it to reload.

    fwconsole reload

The reload command is the same as pressing the red "Apply" button.

I have a laptop that isn't kicking back that TLS error in that Office tool. I have tried moving another system that does get the TLS error into the same OU as the laptop and ran gpupdate /force and rebooted, also brought Windows fully current and uninstalled Webroot. Can't figure out the difference

All this is my opinion. I see IT as managing and recommending tools that the business uses to function as a business. I see software as just one of those tools. Software development simply develops that software, and generally from a point of view of a closed system product. As a software developer, I would guess the main responsibilities would be to make sure the software functions for whatever business purpose it was created for. But as IT, I try and make all the pieces fit together so that there is a comprehensive picture of how we do business. In my case of the ERP, they are focused on making the product functional at a basic level, but completely miss other business needs, such as security, even though the best place for security measures are at that same software level.

It's like software developers are a car manufacturer, and IT is the transportation planner. You CAN make a car without regards to what kind of road it will be driven on, or if there are any relevant laws that should be part of the original design. But that would likely be an inferior product to something that we designed from the ground up to not only get you from point A to point B (the actual purpose of a car), but to also incorporate things like safety features, or navigation, or whatever so that the overall experience of the user was more than the basic functionality of the actual transportation.

@JaredBusch I'm looking at the AirMAX lineup and have used a few of the products like the NanoStation 5AC loco with fabulous results.. but the rest of the stuff looks a little more than consumer grade. Do you think this is an accurate breakdown -

Unifi - Small to Medium business with low customization needs. Primarily for Access Layer and down. Nice interface but not standard for routing setup

UniFi routers and switches, yes. UniFi Access Points, are solid for any purpose.

Also, I would personally never use UniFi routing/switching in SMB. But I know some people just live that pretty pane of glass that they never look at after 3 weeks.

I was actually just talking about this with some coworkers of mine.

If you ever work with any other system, then work with Windows, it's shocking how silly and ridiculous it is. You can't "see" anything. It's like they wanted to mock people for choosing the GUI.

I love how you frequently go to this - they must want to mock people..

I'm sure it rarely if ever actually starts there. As already said - it was legacy, and never updated. They are finally getting around to updating most of the control panel applets - but we're still frequently stuck dealing with the old style for things like the java security admin, etc.

But wouldn't that be hilarious if it were true?

Internal MS plot to fuck with people: "Haha these idiots buying our operating system for the GUI... you know what would REALLY be funny? Release management tools that they can't see, so they have to squint their eyes and get really close to the screen. Their eyesight will get worse and they'll look even older while doing it with that stupid look on their face. HAH!!"

As others said, you are clear here. Licensing is by the number of servers deployed, and the number of users on the network. AD is covered by those things, it's an "included feature" once you are covered otherwise. There is no specific licensing for AD, only for the server/user combo. So you can deploy AD in any configuration that makes sense for you. The licensing will remain the same whether you use AD in some complicated matter, just one domain, or even not at all.
