@scottalanmiller no. Single strand single mode can carry 40+Gbps today.

I think you are misunderstanding the meaning of speed as we were discussing. We are talking about the speed of the signal going down the line, not the bandwidth. People often call bandwidth speed, but it is not.

Also, copper can do 40GB/s plus today, too. The bandwidth is determined by the protocol, the speed is determined by the media.

      Home PBX

I was definitely considering setting up a home PBX but I don't know if I want to subscribe to any actual phone numbers

You can learn a lot without doing that. Although voip.ms makes it SO cheap.

And you can make calls without buying a phone number at all. Just pay per use.

What option is that? I don't recall seeing that (granted this was some time ago)

VoIP.ms has never required purchasing a number to have an account and setup a trunk.

You simply have no way to receive calls from the PSTN.

      Ah.

We use ConnectWise Control (formerly ScreenConnect [SC]).

Honestly, I would be hard pressed to give any other option a second look. BUT, it didn't start out that way. In the product's infancy, and early in our learning curve, we only used its basic functions (which every other products offers too). But as we mastered it; and it became a more complex and flexible product, we have turned it into a be-all/end-all for RMM. The things we can do through SC would amaze you. Granted most of it is OS related, so it's not something SC magically provides, but the fact you can to it without ever seeing or connecting to the gui at the other end make it extremely valuable.

Are you using hosted or on-premises?

On premises. About 50 feet from me 🙂 Running on an Intel NUC 🙂

Windows or Linux? Windows runs better with lots of resources, Linux runs way better for us in cloud on a "per dollar" basis.

Windows. Runs great. About 3500 Clients in Access Mode.

@scottalanmiller said in Orchestrate and control many web sites:

@Emad-R Exactly, that's more than running your own. $2.95 PER WEBSITE is quite expensive. Run your own and you can do it for $.35 per site!

No you cannot. Not for a single site or even a dozen.

$5 vultr instance / 12 sites comes in at $0.42

That doesn't count the labor to maintain, patch, make resiliant (excluding content related development, etc).
While certainly not expensive, it is also certainly not $0.35.

Ah, but don't forget, when we did a labour study we found that dealing with your own install had lower labour than when dealing with a shared instance because you don't get raw access. So we lowered labour.

So my numbers were obviously without labour, but so were the shared numbers. If you include labour both go up, but the shared goes up more from what we found in testing.

Wouldn't it best to use the SSD for things like caching, page file?

Neither the host nor the guests should be paging. If they are, then there is a problem with the way things are set up host wise or in-guest resources wise.

But there should be a file for emergencies.

Ok this is something I don't understand then Windows still has a default paging file... are you saying that in typical use it's rarely actually touched? When I've looked at task manager I frequently see that the system is writing to the page file but the RAM itself is only half used or so..

You should also rarely use Windows 😉

But I don't see that working very well for large files - say AutoCAD or even some graphics files.

AutoDesk and Dessault both have toolkits to get around SMB limitations. I think most CAD vendors do actually.

Yes, CAD is something that basically always does LANless on its own. It has special needs and normally handles them. You don't use NextCloud or anything like it, nor do you use SMB or anything like that.

only for a premium, but they are rarely if ever rolled into the base product, at least not fully featured

Technically, all fire sharing is a sort of premium somewhere.

You are "creating" a problem that simply doesn't exist!!

Cockpit terminal tab, Copy & paste in a Windows 10 vm works.
I just tried it again in v1809 (OS Build 17763.107)

No, he is not. Also, no, it does not "just work" as you say. If it did, the post would never have been made.

I consistently have random issues using copy and paste into a web interface terminal. Both Cockpit and UNMS. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

I do it little enough, that i never care to toubleshoot it.

I'll second this - The troubles in pasting into a web based console are real - and sometimes seemingly random.

I am willing to blame Windows on this problem - but the problem is real.

@Dashrender as a general rule you are right: decreasing too much the delay at the wrong time lets you install 1809. This is why I've not solved.

I'm guessing you got 1803 instead of 1809 because MS is super slow rolling 1809 because of the problems they had during the first role out.

Yeah the upgrade keys were full upgrade not vl keys.

I think they"expired" because we removed our Kms server a while ago.

Any way it all works now 😁

Well - the expire notice is, as you said, because the VLMK ISO that was used to install these machines making them KMS/MAK dependant, can't contact a KMS server. You can fix this by replacing the KMS key with a MAK key. Then the machine will activate directly against MS and you'll be golden.

I had to do this for a Win7 machine I moved off my main network and onto a private network that only had direct internet access - i.e. it could no longer reach my KMS server.

Dec 2019 I'm going to have to move another Win7 machine to a totally isolated network. I'm guessing I'm going to need to get it to an OEM Key, activate against MS, then it should be fine forever being offline.

@travisdh1 I just went through all of this last night in order to expand space on a CentOS 7 VM.

All of the guides and info seemed really bad. Nothing was consolidated or concise.

I ended up with this guide working to get what I needed done except for the last step. The guide said to use resize2fs and that does not work. I had to use xfs_growfs as pointed out in an answer to this post.

I just had to do this again.. Time to make a write up here because the original article is no longer online. Had to use the wayback machine to verify my notes.

It be a lot more easier now using Cockpit?

      CentOS 7

You can do it on CentOS.

      0_1543366308622_lvmcockpit.png

Also a quick tip is if you do an lvextend -r it will auto resize the filesystem.
