Interesting: Fedora 25 starts to panic with RAM < 512MB at the beginning of the kernel init phase, even in text mode. Just had a look at the manual which clearly says that Fedora requires 1GB of RAM.

Looks like I'm out of luck and have to stick to Ubuntu / Debian.

Another thing to note is with RHEL/CentOS 7.3 they recommend a 1GB boot partition instead of 512MB.

      Just an aside.

Should work as long as you keep an eye on it. Ubuntu for example likes to keep old kernel and initrd images there until you clean them up (e.g. apt autoclean etc)

Ya I usually keep 3 and remove the others but I think the images are getting big enough they needed to adjust the size. If you do anew install it defaults to 1GB.

I guess I could do a wildcard at the beginning and end of whatever I'm searching for with killall but that freaks me out a little. I could accidentally do a lot of damage with that.

Since @Dashrender privately chastised me for trying to test something over RDP, I figured I'd publicly announce that it plays fine when sitting in front of the machine, lol.

      hehe

A minor issue that I'm starting to notice in Windowed mode is that when you move the mouse to the bottom edge of the screen, it doesn't scroll down. Left, right, and top seem to work.

There's also no easy way to ALT+TAB out of it -- even in windowed mode.

Expensive, but looks like some really great hardware. I could definitely get by with a less expensive model.

I found traditional Unix hierarchy more confortable for interactive shell use, Mac os X is a pain with all that capital letters. Seems like a tribute to the "case seinsitive".

      Yeah, this is unnecessarily complicated.

To further muddy the waters, on a default install of OS X (10.11 in my case), things are not case sensitive. However, you can set that option if you partition the drives yourself.

Well yeah, OSX is just ridiculous.

I came very close to getting a job at ABC but they wanted Mac experience (Guru was the word they used). The guy who got the job lied through his teeth (my friends works there and explained it to me). Being an honest person is hard sometimes.

Who was dishonest? The guy or the company that happily hired someone without experience?

They had no one with Mac experience to really test the guy properly but he knew his stuff generally. Then it came time for him to do something really simple (i honestly forget what its been a while) and he didn't know how to. 😞

And they kept him on even though he lied? If so, then they did too.

      @op's question:
So now what do you do? If I drop completely to Linux - something like this would become a rather annoying event. As someone that has five iPads (in use), four iPods and two iPhones, that could get damn right perturbing.

Stop using Apple products would be my answer. Though you seem to be in too deep already.

That doesn't make sense though - Scott is a HUGE apple fan, and he's on Linux now too.

I tend to agree with Scott's comment earlier, if this is a problem, borrow a friends computer.

So - take @scottalanmiller and the fact that he is now over seas - how practical is borrowing a friends computer?

      I can borrow my daughter's.

@BRRABill said in Repos Make All of the Difference:

Can you explain all of the different repos?

Basically ever major OS except for Windows and Mac OSX, comes with a set of default repositories for software that represent what is considered to be supported as part of the base OS. CentOS, for example, as the core repos that include the repos for the Base OS, one for pulling source files and a few others that are normally off by default. This allows you to easily install the smallest possible or reasonable OS and add additional software as needed only. No need to bundle it all in and bloat the system, yet still trivially easy to add on what you need.

Anyone can operate their own repo. So you can make your own if you want. The ML servers use a repo from the MongoDB folks so that we pull the latest and greatest, supported and official MongoDB database servers directly from MongoDB instead of waiting for Red Hat to put older, Red Hat supported versions into the RH repos. So our MongoDB is managed transparently with the rest of the system, but we configure it to be much more modern than the MongoDB instance available with the OS itself.

Thanks - I will proceed without using ZFS - I prefer hardware RAID.

      Tim

ZFS is perfectly fine with hardware RAID, if you like ZFS' features otherwise (like zsend is nice) then there's no reason to avoid it. If you don't plan to use any unique features, then XFS is my "go to" choice by default. Very fast, very stable.

@JJoyner1985 said in UNIX: What Is a Tarball:

So, do you think the reason I am seeing a lot more gzip in use with tarballs is due to the familiarity of gzip and the negligible difference in the compression between it and bzip2? Basically, bzip2 doesn't make enough of an improvement with sufficient regularity to entice people to move away from gzip, or is there some other benefit to gzip that my training material hasn't covered?

That's correct. The difference between the two is generally small enough that people are not concerned. And lots of systems still don't have bzip2 installed by default so if you want scripts or whatever to work universally you often use gzip because you know that it is always there and predictable.
