RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
I just started a 6+TB VM move from one of my locations to another across the wan. Oh, and converting from vmware to hyper-v while I was at it. Let's hope it all goes well.

RE: Minetest
The more I read, the more I like. Ultimately, it's just a way for me and the boys to enjoy spending time together. We also play a lot of board games and card games.

RE: Minetest
from what i read, the minetest worlds are 60k cubed. I can't think of any good reason to even go out that far on a standard MC map. The vertical distance is a big deal.

RE: Minetest
honestly, that part alone makes me want to try this. I always thought 256 was way way too short. It totally throws off the scale of things, and that fact that worlds were +/-30 million in X and Z made it even more distorted. I know there was the cubic chunks mod in MC, but as I understand it, lighting is a big part of why MC does't have a taller limit currently. I always wanted Large mountains, but even the ones that look good in MC still aren't really that tall IRL.

And in MC i can only dig or build 256 blocks deep. What is this, child's play. Minetest I can go 31000 blocks up or down!
that part intrigues me

redstone for one is missing. There seem to be mods that add some of that back, but not everything. Also, nether and the end.

Apple says iOS update will avoid Qualcomm patents, China iPhone ban
Apple is appealing Qualcomm's China-wide ban on older iPhone models.
Apple's patent battle with Qualcomm in China has intensified this week, with Qualcomm seeking a broader ban and Apple claiming it has a workaround to avoid Qualcomm's patents.
Does anyone know what the actual claimed infringement is?

I just setup all the AV equipment for our company's 50th anniversary banquet we are having tonight.

RE: Comcast rejected by small town—residents vote for municipal fiber instead
We are lucky. We pay $90 for gig symmetrical at our HQ. The branch is like $300 for 1000/500

RE: Minetest
it looks like it's not quite up to MC in features, but interesting.

only because I don't want to lose a valid windows 10 installation unless I do it on purpose.
HUH? That's sunk cost thinking.
You're making this into a server, then do what makes it sing as a server best. Installing Windows 10, then using Hyper-V on (actually likely under) windows 10, you still can't turn off the Win10 VM, so you'll be giving up resources to it for no reason.
I might want a windows VM. If I install KVM, I can't get windows for a later workload without paying for it. It is sunk cost, but it's also just a home project. The most it would do is probably share some storage inside the home LAN.
I'm late back to this - but you could install your Windows 10 into a VM under KVM, your current license would be totally valid for such an install.
yeah, I will probably end up doing this.

I'm assuming you already own the game, but for anyone who wants to play a game like Minecraft but one that is open source check out Minetest.
FOSS and playing with friends/family is quick to do.
link?

If I blow away windows and install KVM, and then later decide that I want a windows 10 VM, won't it have to be licensed? Or will it somehow know that it was once licensed on that machine, even as a later VM? I dont think it would know, and would therefore need a new license.
Pull the key from BIOS. You can use it to activate the VM.
I had no idea you could do that. Thats awesome.

The PC already has licensed windows 10, which is why I would consider hyper-v, but part of me wants to try out KVM and play around with it.
Hyper-V is free. That it has a Windows 10 license gets you nothing. And if it is Windows 10 Home, you have to remove it to use Hyper-V, anyway.
It's pro.
