we have a 4 year election cycle. That is our equivalent, though only in purpose. Presidents may get only 1 term if they are incompetent. In the UK, the governments can last for as long as the majority holds.

So the issue with "Windows on the hardware" is that is it creates licensing restrictions that make moving your VM's around difficult among other issues.
So Windows should never be on the hardware. Just install Hyper-V and create your VM's with your licensing.
The question here is about SMBs, where you don't always have a say in what they've got, you simply have to deal with the existing stuff, under a very tight budget. If you have the option to plan and do things right, then of course there's plenty of best practice out there to follow.
And for Hyper-V to be an option, you do need Windows on the hardware. There is no such thing as "baremetal hypervisor" - every hypervisor needs an OS to be able to work, even if it's a small stripped down OS like the Xen kernel.
The benefit of "added licensing" is universal, regardless of what hypervisor you use. With Server Standard X you always get the right to create 2 Virtual Machines. Always.
Last time I checked with an MS licensing specialist, that was the case for the DC edition, and even then MS weren't too happy to activate your machines unless you also got a site license, a VLK or a select-6 pack. For SMBs, even if you do technically have the option to activate windows servers on non-MS virtual hardware, the procedure of doing that will hurt.
My information is a bit dated though, they might have improved things since 2010-2012-ish.
If you have the option to actually do things right and you are able to activate your windows vms without problems, KVM is a great choice, especially since if you have to scale, you can deploy oVirt
all of this is basically wrong.

We own gemequipment.com, but I have not been part of that whole deal so I dont know where we stand on that. If you look at our website, it's atrocious. I have no idea where it is hosted or anything. If I setup a domain for NC, I would likely pick something else so as to not mix the two.
they must have updated the site recently, it's not quite as bad as it was. Still, not my department as of now.

I attempted to make a team on the old host with (2) ports, but I did not use the method that most of the posts on ML use. I created a new vswitch with both ports as members using WAC, but I am not sure if this is the same as what I see in other posts. In WAC, I am able to
WAC did not exist when I wrote my posts.
At this time I have never even setup WAC yet for a client.
So I have no idea what the settings are.
I'm not impressed much with it. As far as I can tell, you cannot see the console of a non windows VM, because it forces it to go through RDP. Maybe there are hoops to jump through to enable RDP to a linux machine, but I have not bothered to find out why. So I am using both WAC and hyper-V manager for the time being.

RE: Hyper-V teaming worth it for LACP?
@JaredBusch So to summarize, configure it as switch independent and only change it if I see inbound traffic saturating a single link?

RE: file sharing in the 21st century
Back on this topic. With NC, If I want to make this open to the web, what do I need to do? Is it just a matter of registering a domain somewhere, get external DNS to point to it, and then port forward from my router to the NC server?

If they are an AD environment, it is hard to beat just using Hyper-V Server + Veeam.
This is what I just did, for all the same reasons.

@scottalanmiller that is kind of my point. I believe you are allowed up upgrade to wherever you left off, so long as you have the files yourself. As VMWare removes access to the files if you aren't under maintenance.
Right, and ability to restore in case of hardware failure is pretty important to basically everyone.
If you don't keep your install ISO's, then that is pretty foolish and on your own head.

Hyper-V teaming worth it for LACP?
I recently setup my new host and one of my old ones on Hyper-V 2019. The old host got a new (2) 10GB NIC and the new host has (4) 10GB ports. In my efforts to get the hosts working and all my VM's converted over, I neglected to setup teaming on the host. Now that most of my VM's are converted, I attempted to make a team on the old host with (2) ports, but I did not use the method that most of the posts on ML use. I created a new vswitch with both ports as members using WAC, but I am not sure if this is the same as what I see in other posts. In WAC, I am able to set it to dynamic for the load balancing algorithm (the only other choice is Hyper-V port), but there is no place to say if it is switch independent or dependent. Also, if I look under NIC teaming in server management, it shows up as a vEthernet at 20gbps, but does not have any other information about algorithm or mode. I am wondering if I should break this back apart and do it from server management (which does have all the options). Also, I have read @JaredBusch's comments on generally using switch independent mode because of it's ease, but since my switch (edgeswitch XG) does support LACP, it seems like it would be beneficial to set it up to help balance incoming traffic as well.

RE: Random Thread - Anything Goes
We homeschool a few of our kids. I know that as far as school goes, I am way more interested in developing my children's character than in teaching them facts from a book. In the day of information being literally right at your fingertips with google, the facts become just facts. I spend my effort teaching them to be good people, and also teaching them things like reasoning and logic, and the skills needed to figure something out. Personally, if I want to know some facts, I can just look them up quickly. Knowing how to apply them correctly to life is the real skill that should be focused on.

I'm not sure yet. I did it last night before I left and I will have to figure it out again

Im trying three different converters, and they are all failing

I'm about to give up on hyper-V. I cannot seem to get any of my existing VM's to convert over.

I am trying to create some simple hyper-V machines on my windows 10 laptop. So far, very unimpressed. Using windows admin center, I cannot even get a console to see what is going on in the VM. If I use hyper v manager, it's a little better, but the whole experience is not nearly what I was expecting.
It's Windows and Hyper-V, how much did you want?
