    • RE: Hitting the limits of the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter

      @scottalanmiller

      I just saw the price of the Infinity lol I realized I need to go down a level 🙂
      I'm hitting the same issue. I think we have maxed out our Edge Router (it get's insanely hot and utilization is often spiking to 70-90% with the QoS enabled.

      I also so my 300 Mbps download speed drop to 100-160 Mbps (if I was lucky) and my 20 Mbps upload speed dropped to around 10-12 Mbps with the QoS enabled. I don't think it can handle the number of endpoints, QoS, and packet filtering we have on it. But at my other site, with same router but less people, endpoints etc they are just trucking along just fine. Of course there on a 100-150 Mbps download and 10-15 Mbps upload. But I think when everyone is on with every device, it's handling it fine.

    • RE: Is there a way to move vm's from VMware ESXI 5.5 to usb directly from host?

      I have imported all the critical VM's over with 0 issues. I only have like 3 left that aren't that big of a deal. Then I'm wiping my VMWare Host and rebuilding it from scratch and then taking my Synology NAS and redoing it's storage.

      @NerdyDad

      I normally wouldn't care about the machine and just take the data off and reinstall a vm/app and pull over the data but for some of the machines that wasn't worth the hassle just yet.

      @NerdyDad because VMDK's import straight into XenServer 🙂

      I remove / strip the Xen Tools from the vm, shut it off, then copy it. I import it into XenServer and use it's native tool to perform vm clean up. So far I have imported over 5 vm's with no issues!!

      Hey guys my backup time dropped tremendously. It now takes about 10-20 minutes tops! Thanks you saved an entire work day for me 🙂

      Ok that makes more sense sorry. I'm still novice on Linux. But that is definitely a better option. I assume I can also do that from XenServer, I've played with the CLI a little in it more so than VMWare ESXi.

      Thanks guys you just saved me like 8 hours or more 🙂

      Last but not least Scott, thanks for all your help for helping me get into Virtualization and mentoring me on the path! We finally have our office modernized and I can't help but to thank you and everyone at NTG!

      2 newer dell servers and will repurpose the existing dell server we had for a small 3 node cluster running XenServer 7.1 and using XoA 🙂 I'm probably going to need more help on XoA but I have it in a test network at home. I like VMWare ESXi but I'm putting that to the pasture 🙂 XS for me

      @JaredBusch

      Is there a way to save the OVA/VMDK straight from the host to USB 3? Because I guess I'm trying to find ways to avoid the long wait time. It takes about 1-2 hours per VM to backup if I use say Veeam.

      Hey good morning SAM. I'm trying to finish up migrating from VMWare completely. I have a 2 Node (about to be 3) using XenServer.

      My last few VM's on VMWare need to migrated off so I can wipe that server and make it a new XS host.

      I have usb 3 drives and a usb 3 card in the server I'm hoping that's faster than the 1-2 hour backup with Veeam.

      Looking to see if there is a faster way to transfer my vm's off the host, preferably with my USB 3.0 drives... any help/suggestions?

    • RE: Ubiquity NVR Server

      @NerdyDad

      Yes you can actually use the NVR appliance, but I'm referring to the actual software you can install on your own hardware.

      I'm not sure about the NVR managing an Access Point -_(- -)/-

      I have a build of the NVR currently installed and running in production.

    • Ubiquity NVR Server

      Does anyone have experience using UBNT NVR on their own hardware ? [Not the appliance]. I am looking to determine if there are more real world performance usage scenarios that anyone would like to share. I currently have 25 Ubiquity cameras and they are working seamlessly. I have the camera's separated in their own VLAN. One of my biggest issues I'm experiencing is that the host is very close to topping out the processors, so I'm migrating to a beefier rack mounted host.

      My Current Host:

    • RE: How Complete is XenServer Really

      Trust me, I've had to deal with the bargain deals too much. I don't bother unless I'm forced to. Walmart shouldn't be used unless its for general supplies and even then its kinda just if its an emergency. Amazon, New Egg and even Best Buy do a better job than most retailers. For every laptop Best Buy sells you and it breaks (most likely the screen), it cost more for them to repair it (unless you do it yourself), hence the crappy/wasteful model.

      I personally like to have laptops that are business class, offlease/refurbed, can hold 8 GB or better of ram, multi-core, and last but not least dockable and able to use a SSD. For our business model, they will last 5 years or better until parts become an issue. We don't have high requirements but moving over to full VDI right now is a pipe dream.

    • RE: How Complete is XenServer Really

      I need AD only because I lack control over the sites. I spend more time making band-aids than actually a solution. Honestly, for the price range, the 300.00 laptops aren't a smart buy. If they break (which these current generation craptops tend to break more now) they are just chuckable, they aren't meant to be kept.

      We have more than 10 models of laptops and more than 5 models of desktops. The desktops usually aren't a problem but the laptops tend to take more time to deal with. I'm a big advocate of lowering it down to 2-3 models of desktop/laptop.

      While I might try to steer them to the best financial decision, often what I suggest gets overlooked or "forgotten". People run and buy things without approval or any idea if it is even supported. Getting over the politics and power plays from people is hard. Right now, payrange I obviously can't discuss in open, but I'm paid decently but remember, i'm in non profit world. Some logic goes out the door 😞

      We already have consultants (pretty good team I have).

      Yea, I mean even today, as I was tasked with getting some new systems (got overridden for donation from local school) I still preach that whether your the owner or a manager, you shouldn't be purchasing things on your own especially software/hardware. They don't know what to look for other than what sales or their gut tells them. If you try to sit and explain things like requirements and processes then your told its too technical lol.

      I'm sitting here enjoying my evening taking apart a craptacular 10 year old laptop to be told it needs to go in production...really, the price we about to pay for refurbing it cost more than me just outright buying a refurbished modern laptop.....politics

      At the time, using the native reinstaller / imaging tools was better than dealing with FOG for 20 different machine types. Don't get me wrong I have seen the power. After being shown Smart Deploy @ Spiceworld, I'm more in favor of their solution. Lot of my issues stem around political issues inside the office along with just people ignoring best practices, to do it their own way usually excluding IT.

    • RE: How Complete is XenServer Really

      I will say this, it's not been easy, having to plan and replan for this year, and the next possible 3-5 years along with the political climate (because if the government shuts down, hell we sometimes don't know if we are allowed to operate), its very very hard to mak e decisions sometimes without some harsh consequences. Sure, fear can be involved. If I get the wrong hardware, software, service, vendor etc, then that weakens "what appears" to be my leadership for the program even though it shouldn't get to that point. Sometimes I'm the last person to know ANYTHING and/or disconnected from other business units sometimes intentionally.

      Sometimes the lesser of my two evils works out for my benefit, sometimes it doesn't.
