      Haha, here you go @QuixoticJeremy!

Ummmm I don't know if you were joking or not but this is friggen brilliant! I very seriously am considering buying one.

Only half joking... I would definitely use one. Especially if I can get a cool custom one.

What would y'all customize yours to look like?

Me personally, considering that I'm a league of legends fanatic (at least I was like 2 years ago) I'd get the TSM logo on the headset. How about you?

Oh man, you could do so many cool things. I'd probably do a Star Wars rebel fighter helmet. I bet a big daddy from BioShock could also look really cool if done right.

TSM would be a great choice! I bought a TSM jacket for one of my friends on his birthday last year. I've been seriously considering getting one for myself... https://solomidstore.myshopify.com/products/tsm-jacket

They're worth it :). I have a bjergsen hoody personally but I would like one of those jackets too. Or a custom Quixotic one would work as well.

@scottalanmiller need to experiment myself and thinking of what limit can I able to push myself into this. change of course too alternate techie thing

Start by automating your job with scripting in the appropriate language for your systems (powershell or bash).

Then one you understand the logic flow of scripting, you can choose to get into development and actual programming.

This provides you with the benefit of improving your knowledge and your work environment at the same time.

I definitely agree with this. It actually makes the knowledge that you are gaining applicable to your everyday life to begin with. That's huge. I also agree with Scott that scripting langs are very popular right now. Compiled does have it's place in my opinion but there are arguments to be had there. That being said compiled languages would be the last thing that I would suggest for a sysadmin as it's applicability would be very little for you (if any).

      Development appears to have stalled.

Considering it's open source - I wonder if the Sodium folks could use this code to jump start theirs?

That would only make sense if this lined up with the Sodium project goals, which it does not. This isn't an RMM tool, this is a Salt GUI. Sodium isn't a Salt GUI. This isn't a management tool. So while one does use Salt and one is a GUI for Salt, it looks like the overlap probably stops there.

Developers know that picking up other projects generally means more work than starting over. Bootstrapping with old code tends to be counter productive, especially if the old code is not absolutely exactly what you need to use. If it's not using the languages, technologies, frameworks, authentication, coding styles, paradigms, licensing and such that is identical to what is needed in the new project it is likely to be an encumbrance rather than a boost.

Even with bespoke software, NTG tends to start over from scorched earth every seven years or so because of developments in the industry and changes in direction making it cheaper and more effective to not even reuse our own code that we made in house and own completely internally and already know.

      Can I upvote this twice?

@quixoticjeremy : Honestly though, a field for "Alias" would be excellent as sometimes you can more easily describe a particular PC by task, user, or looks than by the actual hostname.

"The loud thing under Jeremy's desk"

BTW, the hostname is "HPML110G7" for the computer in question...

@manxam There is an assettag field already, and at one point I could have swore I did do a "alias" field as well but perhaps that was lost when I released the "new" dash. I'll look into getting that back on this latest dash.

I did checkout osticket last week, as result of seeing a post, here on ML. It does look good and the hosted pricing is reasonable.

NTG has been hosting their own, it's pretty simple to do. But we'll likely be on Sodium in a week or two. Just a few little things need to be finalized for it to be at a point that we can flip over.

      Does my boss know this?

      She's the one that decided.

Why wouldn't you wait until it's a more finished product before putting something like this into actual production?

Sure, put not even alpha software in a test environment, but in production? No way! But I guess that depends on where you are and how many and what types of users it will effect.

You could set it up in a real test environment, and tell some users to throw in a ticket here and there, so you can provide Sodium with some real feedback.

Using Sodium as a ticket system - one that should evovle anyway - isn't so much of a problem that I see. Now when you reference the other features - that may be a different story.. though starting now, you can get use to some of the aspects of it as it's being developed - and know how it will work for you as more options are available.

Now - being part of the beta or even alpha isn't always the best - and while there can be several releases of Sodium a day.. that may or not be a problem and may or may not cause some problems...

Some times you just have to say Meh,.. WTH and go for it. Now - when you are talking about a few hundred to thousand PCs,.. Meh I'm not rebuilding all those... so - nope.

That's what I meant. If you work for a place such as the one I do, and you rip out the current fully featured, polished, supported, and working ticketing system... and throw in something like Sodium (no offense, I'm excited about it), your in for some major trouble from all aspects.

That's why I said if it's just a few users/computers, sure, go for it if it fits in your environment.

However, I could stick it in a test environment on the back burner... and ask a few users such as those in IT and some others to throw up a ticket in there once in a while for testing. Using that it could potentially replace the current system and save the company money. But before going too far, I'd keep it internal only to just myself and a few other IT coworkers.

No offense taken whatsoever, this is a completely logical approach. We are EXTREMELY early in development, it is what it is :). We just appreciate the input/support we're getting here at ML. And helpdesk is coming along FAST.

I think that both make sense. A live stream (but it needs to be able to be edited I think) of... "today I did X on this asset" is a really cool feature. But it doesn't take the place of a "wiki style" document where perm information is kept.

I think both of those points are good points. Makes sense to me.

Still sorting out VM's and hosts.

      On osTickets and ScreenConnect today.
while playing with the Raspberry Pi for TV's too.

osTicket would be my second choice 🙂

As @QuixoticJeremy's team works on the helpdesk function for Sodium, we'd love if you considered giving us a try. It's free and hosted and while it's not quite ready today, it might be ready for you by the time you get osTicket installed! We've got a great vision for where the helpdesk is going and think that it is going to be a very cool feature in our product suite. If you jump in now, you'll have a chance to help guide the product and ensure that it meets your needs!

You guys are building a ticketing system as well?

The first implementation of it has already been released. Maybe 4 or 5 days ago. It is at a very basic point at the moment but with full intention of implementing a LOT of functionality for it. MangoCon has slowed my team up a hair but we should be doing another release in the next few days. Maybe even live from MC!

Right they are completely accurate in everything that they say and let us fill in the gaps to create the end picture. • RE: Sodium release for helpdesk: related tickets, attachments, changed time management, etc.

@dustinb3403 said in Sodium release for helpdesk: related tickets, attachments, changed time management, etc.:

When closing tickets it would be good to either remove them from the view, or provide a top level status of "Closed".

Color coding the tickets might be useful as well. Low Priority - Yellow, Med Priority - Orange, High Priority - Red.

As a really cool feature it would be nice to have the priority of a ticket go up in scale if no progress has been made to the ticket based on when the ticket was made.

IE Low Priority - Can't Print - Green (24 hour window to fix). If it's been 6 hours and no one has worked on the ticket, or put any comments on it from the IT side, the priority goes up to Orange, In another 6 hours it goes to a Red color.

Automatically adding notes along the way as to why the ticket was escalated.

Couldn't agree more on most of these points and actually is something that I think about regularly.

      • Removing tickets from view when closed: this will likely happen when I put filtering in place so that people can still view closed tickets until they can search specifically for them.

      • Color coding: I like this, and hadn't thought of it.

      • Priority going up with no progress: I feel like this would need to be an option to be able to turn on or off.

I really like these suggestions though. Duly noted.
