Waiting on my IT guy to wake up so that he can push a release lol.

@Dashrender You sir are a monster at finding bugs! Thanks for catching that. I'll take a look here in a minute after I finish up something that everyone is going to be happy to have

RE: Stanford Removes Java in Favor of JavaScript in Intro to Computer Science Course
@scottalanmiller I think you are spot on, the constructs of js does not lend itself well to giving the student more overall applicable knowledge for other languages. I still think that C++ is a great language personal. Sure it's going out of style (everywhere other than game dev) but to use it well your OOP knowledge has to be solid. I mean it definitely is more challenging than java and there are extra things that you have to learn that you don't have to handle in other languages because other languages may automatically handle it cough* memory management * cough but it's still good to know how things work behind the scenes. Then again C++ might just be too daunting for a beginner's comp sci course.
edit: after all you do make the point that most go into college with zero OOP knowledge to begin with =/

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@dafyre Mine did not give me that convenience this morning lol. Mine came into the room and was like.... shouldn't you be up? It's 7:15.... meanwhile my alarms have been going off the past half hour. (she had gotten up at 6:45 with the baby)

RE: How to Play Wii Games on Ubuntu Linux with Dolphin
@mlnews Yep, works great. I use it specifically for gamecube myself (have to get my super smash bros melee fix every once ina while). I've never had any issues with it.

RE: Sodium Update! New Dashboard!
@dashrender This is true. It is a bit on the large side, we will be increasing the size of the dash by a little bit in the very near future. There is however plans for use of the rest of that space on the right a little later down the road.

RE: Google Go So Popular, Go 2 Is Coming

Great news... Now somebody fix the Korora/Fedora issues for my 2012 Macbook pro, and I will officially convert!
Ok, get a new piece of hardware. Problem solved.
Was about to say tosses mac out window, gives new machine done!

@scottalanmiller Yes, of course, we have UAC actually enabled, and require an external admin account to install anything.
It's installed now.
Just running a CMD would open a command window... fail all things not allowed as non-admin, then close.
I thought I had done that, then poof, it showed up in the console.
Um. . . what?
@dashrender said in Sodium Update!:
FYI, my new install this morning is still not in the console
Yeah mine either.
Hi guys! I'm actively looking into this issue as we speak. Please give me a little bit and I'll figure out what is going on. We have been modifying some of the jobs that pick these up due to us working on linux support and something must have went wrong. I will keep you guys posted!

I concur. Powershell is insanely important to any Windows experience. I was speaking to the idea of a SINGLE language for an intro CS course. I suggested it since Python is platform independent to a large degree and IMHO superior to JavaScript for filling that role. Personally, I agree that we should just get back to C. C is the core language for so many things, and even if you extend IT down into the Internet of Things and microcontrollers etc. it is still extremely relevant.Ironically my intro course was C++. Luckily I had been coding in C++ for a decade at that point so I ended up teaching it but man did that make people suffer lol.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
That moment you're freaking out because your code isn't working and then you find out that IT is doing things on their side of things at the same time. #sighofrelief.

Yeah, I could do that. But I can't deny the fact that the laptop is rock solid and just works. I'm just sick of the way MacOS has gone and I'm ready to jump ship to a better OS.
Have you considered testing any other OS besides Korora/Fedora?
The next OS that I want to test personally is actually Deepin. There seemed to be quite a bit of hype on here for that and it looked slick.

RE: Sodium Update
@dashrender Yep, we're including you guys in EXTREMELY early. One thing that we believe is that there is regularly a very large disconnect between software engineers and IT. Because of this there is also a large disconnect between what software engineers THINK you need and what you actually need. This way we can get great insight that will help direct us from a very early point instead of us having to continuously go back and make changes. We're TRYING to make it the right way from the start.

My intro was Java. I did a advanced level CS C++ course in grad school... I barely passed that class.
Java really is a good intro. C++ is very powerful but it makes the developer manually handle everything this really trips people up (especially when it comes to memory management). The usual result of an intro C++ course is just one long list of memory leaks in every assignment.

RE: Rochester Local News
We're actually talking about this at work right now. Apparently they're making insane money off of this. Selling jersey and gear online and it's constantly sold out and they are actually actively adding more. Every like hour or two it's not sold out anymore.

Hello,
I wish all the best to your children but I wondered this, especially for small kids (I dont have any):
- Would you like your kids to be I.T Smart as you and be in the I.T Field ? I actually would hate it, I would want them the farthest thing from I.T so we can leave the house once a while.
What does this have to do with leaving the house? Granted, if your hobby is something on the computer, you're more likely to stay indoors, but it doesn't mean you're relegated to never going outside.
I think this has more to do with exposure to those other things.
- Abit related to 1, if you teach them how to be smart in using I.T devices, It is scary for me seeing my brother child seeing all those weird videos supposedly target-ted for children on You-tube and ...
How to use devices doesn't mean you're smart in IT, it just means you learned how to use a device. A person who can make an iPad sing doesn't mean they are an IT Pro.
What weird videos are you talking about? Of course as a parent, it's your job to monitor what your children are viewing. I'm pretty sure YouTube has a child friendly mode for things like this.how soon kids age of 4 can navigate smart phone or tablet, but how can we combat this? Offline content perhaps, any other good ideas .
What are you trying to combat? Their use of technology? why? It's the world we live in. Should they have more skills than just how to operate a smart phone/tablet, sure, but should you reduce their skill there? I don't think so.
Is there something about your own life you are unhappy with, that you think forcing yourself to do outdoor activities will make you happier? or any non IT activities that will make you happier?
What about shit like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYDWLuoE-vA
Youtube VideoFor some reason its all the rage for some kinds of kids, they are obsessed with it. The thing is you cant monitor them all the time, btw I heard 2 parents complained over this in Canada and Jordan.
What does that have to do with IT?
I think what he's going at is, how does a parent keep stuff like this away from his children?
Computer goes in the main area of the house where parents can walk by at any time and see what said child is doing (drove my teenager nuts). Also being smarter than said child so that you can search internet history etc.
This is where proxies come into play as well.
Yes until your kid get's better than you at it
At that point, all you can really do is hope they share a same moral base as you. It's really mostly time to get out of the way then.
For the record I think you guys did a really good job....
